ORCOLLO OFF TO SIZZLING START IN GUINNESS WORLD SERIES OF POOL; SPEED CHALLENGE

PhilBoxing.com

Orcollo.
2011 World 8Ball Champion Dennis Orcollo got off to a sizzling start in the first session of the preliminary rounds of the 2012 Guinness World Series of Pool: Speed Pool Challenge.

Orcollo turned in the third best time of the day with a cracking 4:31 minutes which gave the Filipino ace a comfortable margin as the players headed into the second preliminary sessions at the Ciputra World Mall in Surabaya, Indonesia.

While Orcollo sizzled teammates Roberto Gomez and Jeffrey de Luna fell behind. Gomez failed to make an impression on his turn at the tables finishing with the slowest time of the three Filipino challengers with a clocking of 6:43 mins. The Pinoy cue-artist nicknamed ?Superman? has his work cut out for him to advance into the next round as he needs to turn in a much faster time in the second session.

De Luna on the other hand, had more success in garnering competitive times, averaging about a minute for each of the five racks. However, the flashy De Luna was hampered by three missed ball penalties, totaling 30 seconds which added up for a respectable preliminary time of 5:20 mins.

Orcollo, regarded as the top Filipino pool player today, is determined to go for the title and showed his intentions by starting strong to turn in a solid time of 00:52 seconds in his first rack of five. A cleaner break in the second rack allowed him to further improve his result, stopping the clock at 00:45 seconds. A slight miscue in the third rack slowed his pace a little bit but the former world number one quickly recovered and turned in blazing times of 00:51 and 00:59 seconds for the final two racks.

Surprisingly setting the pace was Britain?s Chris Melling who stunned everybody with his remarkable outing on the first day. Flawless pocketing combined with quick draw shooting garnered him the best time of the day at 4:20 mins.

Melling?s compatriot and 2010 World 8-Ball Champion Karl Boyes also kicked off in sizzling fashion. Efficiently calm and collected, he was able to plan his moves with precision and found cleaning the table relatively easy. His total time of 4:24 mins was good enough to finish behind Melling in second place.
