LUMACAD READY TO UPSET ?TYSON? MARQUEZ By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 05 Jul 2012 Lumacad. Fernando Lumacad is ready to pull off a stunning upset when he battles WBA flyweight champion Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez in a super flyweight ten round bout in Sinaloa, Mexico on July 14 which is being billed as an eliminator. Marquez is having trouble making the flyweight limit and is reportedly considering relinquishing his title to move up in weight. His weight problems were evident in his title defense against former world champion Rodel Mayol when he tipped the scales two pounds over the limit but by some ?magic? made it even without sweating it out, the second time around some five minutes later. This prompted Mayol to pull out of the title fight forcing promoters to match Marquez against Richie Mepranum in a super flyweight ten round clash which Marquez won handily. The Marwquez-Lumacad fight is being staged by Fernando Beltran?s Zanfer Promotions even as Beltran recently disclosed that they were negotiating for a unification title fight with WBO champion Brian Viloria. Lumacad?s co-manager, well known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis told the Manila Standard that the Filipino boxer ?is desperate to make a big impact against Marquez and put himself on the world stage with a win.? Maniatis said training camp has been going well and sparring at the Sanman Gym in General Santos City has been excellent. The Australian promoter told us "l know Marquez will start favorite and fights Lumacad in his backyard but I am confident Lumacad can pull a upset and beat Marquez is this fight." While conceding that Marquez ?is a monster puncher? Maniatis is in the best shape of his life and can use ?his excellent boxing skills to pull off an upset.? Marquez was previously set to face mandatory challenger Juan Carlos Revecho and just as the fight was going to a purse bid it was called off by the WBA. Well known Australian promoter Peter Maniatis who had previously informed the Manila Standard that Lumacad was scheduled to face Marquez for his title on July 14 had to backtrack after the WBA sanctioned a title fight between Marquez and Interim title holder Carlos Reveco of Argentina. Marquez who is 23 years old has a record of 33-2 with 25 knockouts. He won the WBA flyweight title with an 11th round TKO over Luis Concepcion of Panama on April 2, 2011 and won by a 1st round knockout in a rematch in Mexico on October 29 that same year. One of Lumacad?s more impressive wins was a unanimous eight round decision over Joseph Rios on November 12, 2011 in which Lumacad dropped Rios once in round 2 and then again in round 5 en route to a comfortable victory. Lumacad has won his last 5 fights, 3 by knockout. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
