Twice a quitter

There was no doubt International Boxing Federation (IBF) and International Boxing Organization (IBO) flyweight champion Vic (The Raging Bull) Darchinyan was the superior fighter in overwhelming Glenn Donaire in their scheduled 12-round bout at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas last Saturday night (Sunday morning, Manila).

Whatever Donaire threw, the Armenia-born Australian gave back twice or thrice more. He was too strong, too tough and too big for the jittery General Santos City challenger.

Darchinyan, a southpaw with an awkward style, decked Donaire with a right hook in the fourth round and was never threatened.

With no sign of a reversal of fortunes, Donaire told referee Tony Weeks he couldn’t continue because of a broken jaw. Donaire claimed the injury was inflicted by a headbutt. Weeks apparently took Donaire’s word for it and after consulting ringside physician Dr. Jerry Davidson, stopped the bout at 1:27 of the sixth round to rule a technical decision.

Under the Nevada State Athletic Commission rules, a fight is decided by the scorecards if it is stopped because of an accidental headbutt after four rounds.

Darchinyan was awarded the technical win by unanimous decision as the three judges turned in identical 60-53 scorecards. * * *
The fight did little to enhance Donaire’s reputation that was tarnished when he surrendered to Filipino prospect Z Gorres in the first round in Las Vegas last year. Donaire claimed he was thumbed by Gorres and couldn’t see, resulting in a knockdown. But referee Jay Nady ignored Donaire’s protest, signaling an end to the bout when the fighter continued to complain. Gorres was declared the winner by first round knockout.

Darchinyan was upset that Weeks didn’t award him a knockout victory. The technical decision snapped his streak of eight straight stoppages. He has protested the decision to the Commission and is seeking a win by knockout.

International referee Bruce McTavish, who watched the fight on TV in his Angeles City home, said if Donaire had a broken jaw, it couldn’t have resulted from a butt. None of the action shown on TV caught Darchinyan butting Donaire.

After the fight, it seemed like Donaire couldn’t decide which side of his jaw was broken. There didn’t appear to be any swelling even as an ice bag was pressed on his right jaw. Donaire was heard on TV speaking clearly so opening his mouth was no problem. He yapped about his "fracture" but it didn’t look like he was in serious pain. Walking back to the dressing room, Donaire was seen on TV greeting fans and pointing to his jaw. He had to be relieved that he finished the fight on his feet. If the bout continued, he would’ve been knocked out for sure.

From the onset, it was evident there was no way Donaire would dethrone the rampaging Darchinyan who raised his record to 27-0, with 21 KOs. One of Darchinyan’s victims was Davao City’s Diosdado Gabi whom he stopped in eight rounds last March.

At the weigh-in on the eve of the fight, Darchinyan checked in at 112 pounds and Donaire, 111. The flyweight limit is 112 pounds. But at noon on the day of the fight, Darchinyan ballooned to 121 and Donaire tipped the scales at 117.

Donaire’s setback was the fifth straight for a Filipino world title challenger this year after Diosdado Gabi, Rodel Mayol, Randy Suico and Michael Domingo. The loss dropped his record to 16-3-1, with nine KOs.

Since the Gorres fight, Donaire won four in a row to set up the fight against Darchinyan. He was fresh from a win over Cesar Lopez by a unanimous 12-round decision for the North American flyweight crown.

Promoter Gary Shaw described Donaire as a skilled boxer whose only chance of beating Darchinyan was to fight smart and shoot down the middle. "Glenn took the Gorres fight on short notice and I don’t think that was indicative of who he is," said Shaw.

On the contrary, Donaire’s performance against Gorres exposed him for what he is — a gutless fighter with no future in the fight game. * * *
To soften the impact of Donaire’s loss, his younger brother Nonito, Jr. captured the North American Boxing Federation and North American Boxing Organization superflyweight titles via a unanimous 12-round decision over Mexican journeyman Oscar Andrade in the undercard.

Nonito, Jr., 23, decked Andrade with a left hook in the second round and breezed to an easy win, his 15th straight, to raise his record to 16-1, with nine KOs. The judges scores were 118-109, 116-111 and 116-111.

Nonito, Jr. once held the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific flyweight title. Andrade, a veteran of 61 fights, lost to Gerry Pe?alosa on points in 2002 and was coming off four wins in a row. The Mexican is the International Boxing Association Continental and WBO Latino bantamweight titleholder.

Van Nuys trainer Don Familton described the brothers as "crowd pleasers and disciplined kids with a terrific work ethic and tremendous dedication to succeed." He said "they eat, sleep and drink boxing — they’re surprisingly mature for their age (and) if I were a promoter, I’d take a chance with these kids."

But judging from Donaire’s best impersonation of Roberto Duran’s "no mas" act in losing to Gorres and Darchinyan, it’s clear he has no heart.
