MANCIO RETAINS PHIL. LT. FLYWEIGHT TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

Mandaue City ? Philippine light flyweight champion Jerson Mancio of the ALA Gym stopped Charlie Cabilla of Bukidnon in the fifth round for a successful first title defense at the Mandaue City Plaza Square Sunday night.

After a tentative start, Mancio knocked Cabilla down with a right straight in the second round. Cabilla got up and the protagonists traded hard punches in the subsequent rounds. In the fifth, a hard right hook to the abdomen sent Cabilla down for the ten count. Referee Tony Pesons signaled the end at the 1:58 mark.

Mancio (15W-3L-3D, 6 KO's), who hails from Agusan del Sur, won the title last year in San Remigio, Cebu by unanimous decision against Jason Canoy of the Omega gym. Cabilla drops to 12W-10L-4D, 2 KO's.

This was the third meeting between Mancio and Cabilla. Four years ago, Mancio stopped Cabilla in four rounds in Cagayan de Oro and in 2010 they would engage in a ten round split draw in Tagbilaran City.

For the undercard matches:

In a tense tactical ten round battle between local prospects, Welbeth Loberanis beat Jason Canoy by majority decision. The scorecards read 95-95, with two judges for Loberanis at 96-94 and 96-95.

Jimmy Paypa beat Albert Villacampa by unanimous decision in an eight round brawl. The scores 79-73,79-73 and 80-72.

Zaldy Aroa won by TKO against Gilbert Garciano in the second round. Referee Ben Necesario waived off the fight at the 1:42 mark when Garciano turned his back after receiving a series of punches to the head.

Pedro Balaba beat Julie Agrabio by first round TKO. Referee Tony Pesons stopped the fight after Agrabio was trapped in the neutral corner receiving several unanswered punches. Time 1:42.

In the opening bout of the evening, Sherwin Paro knocked out Ricky Nunez in the first round. A right to the temple sent Nunez crashing to the canvas and he got up on the count of nine still on wobbly legs. Referee Ben Necesario counted him out at 2:07.

This free to the public event was presented by ALA Promotions, Cobra Energy Drink and the Mandaue City Sports Commission.
