Ricky Duenas Flattens Hughes Lawrence in Pomona By Jhay Oh Otamias PhilBoxing.com Mon, 14 May 2012 Local favorite Ricky Duenas did not disappoint his fans as he made short work of Lawrence Hughes with a clinical knockout at 1.52 of the first round, a few hours ago, in their main event showdown at the Finish Line Sports Grill in Pomona, California. Lawrence Hughes started the opening round strong, flicking jabs and fast one-two combos, and constantly keeping his distance in an effort to avoid close quarter encounters. However, Ricky Duenas relentlessly stalked his opponent around the ring, and, finally nailed him in the corner with a crisp left hook to the body, followed by two hammering rights to the head, as Lawrence Hughes crumpled to canvas, visibly hurt and unable to continue, prompting Referee Lou Moret to stop the fight. With the win, bigger fights loom in the horizon for this fast rising Junior Welterweight prospect and pride of the Maywood Boxing Club, whose record now stand at 11-1, 5KOs. In the supporting bouts, Holly Lawson won a split decision over Elisa Moreno in a highly entertaining Female Welterweight fight. Scores were 40-36 twice for Lawson, and 39-38 for Moreno. Junior Featherweight Oscar Venagas stopped Santiago Alonso in the first round in a one sided slaughter, upping his record to 3-1, 2KOs. Robert Guzman won by unanimous decision over Hector Castro in the Junior Middleweight bout. Scores read 40-36 twice, and 39-37. In a very well applauded bout, Kevin Sagado defeated Felipe Lara by a majority decision in their pro debut Junior Welterweight fight, with scores of 39-37 twice, and 38-38. And, in the lone 4-round amateur fight, Super Lightweight Andy Garcia scored a majority decision win over Ismael Uriel. The event, billed as Champions of Tomorrow, was a presentation of Showdown Promotions in association with Union Boxing Management.
