PhilBoxing.com

Thirty one teams, , 18 in the men?s division and 13 in the women?s side, are entered in the National Open Summer Grand Slam men?s and women?s softball championships which unfurls its 2012 edition April 29 to May 5 in Clark Field in Pampanga.

Four foreign entries, two each in the men?s and women?s play will also vie for honours, which, for the first time in the near four-decade existence of the annual event under the aegis of the Amateur Softball Association-Philippines will have two divisions ? the Open and Club competitions.

Defending men?s champion Air Force and women?s titleholder Adamson University head the Open division plays, announced national team head coach Robert Iturralde during Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.
Navy, Army, Rizal Technological University, Zamboanga City, Jk.com Zamboanga, Salazar Institute of Cebu, Kensei Club of Brunei and West Java of Indonesia will be contesting the reign of the Airmen in the men?s bracket.

Adamson U Alumni, Navy, Army, RTU, Papua Province of Indonesia and West Java of Indonesia will be testing the Lady Falcons?
title-retention bid.

Bulacan State University, Bulacan Province, Ateneo Coaches, Pampanga Province, Angeles City, Laguna Province, Bacolod City, Albay Province and MS Marikina make up the men?s Club Division field. Polytechnic University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, University of Cordillera of Baguio, NCR, Central :Luzon State University, University of Makati and Antipolo City will be playing in the women?s Club Division play.

The reason for implementing the Club Division play, according to Iturralde, who represented Amateur Softball Association-Philippines in the forum, sponsored by Powerade, ACTV and FILA, is to give club teams, especially in the provinces avenue to parade their talents and experience playing against team from the Big City.

As in the past edition of the National Open, members of the national men?s and women?s teams ? the Philippine Blu Boys and Blu Girls ? will be distributed among the teams playing in the Open Division.

The Kensie Club of Brunei, however, a team owned by the Princess of Brunei, will will have current Blu Boy Apol Rosales, who was hired earlier after the Philippine Sports Commission dismantled the PH squad, and top notch Filipino campaigners Edzel, Manuel and Roldan Bacarisas and a Canadian pitcher in the Men?s Open Division.

Blu Girls Esmeralda Tayag and Dione Macasu, on the other hand, will banner the Papua Province of Indonesia in the Women?s Open play, also following the disbandment of the women?s team as a result of the PSC? policy dropping softball as non-priority sports despite sweeping the two gold medals in the last SEA Games.
