SONNY BOY JARO TO DEFEND WBC TITLE IN MID-JULY IN JAPAN By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 10 Apr 2012  Newly crowned WBC flyweight champion Sonny Boy Jaro will make the first defense of the title he won with a devastating 6th round TKO of veteran Pongsaklek Wonjongkam, the WBC?s ?Fighter of the Decade? whom he dropped four times en route to a stunning upset will make his first defense against Japan?s Toshiyuki Igarashi in mid-July in Japan. The flyweight champion?s manager Aljoe Jaro told the Manila Standard that he had discussed the title defense with well-known Japanese businessman-sportsman Akihiko Honda and that ?the fight is confirmed for either July 12 or 15.? The opponent will be Toshiyuki Igarashi, the 28 year old southpaw with a record of 15-1-1 with 10 knockouts who won a twelve round unanimous decision in a title eliminator against Wilbert Uicab on November 6, 2011. The lanky Igarashi also scored a 1st round knockout over former world light flyweight title challenger Rexon Flores on July 3, 2010. At the same time Aljoe Jaro said that while Sonny Boy Jaro (34-10-5, 24 bKO?s) wants to avenge his twelve round loss to former champion Edgar Sosa in a light flyweight title bout on September 27, 2008 in which Jaro dropped Sosa in the 9th round but still lost by a wide margin on points, he prefers to stage the title defense in Manila. Aljoe was reacting to Sosa?s statement after winning a twelve round decision also over Uicab in battle for the Silver title which was also billed as an eliminator in Cancun last Saturday. Boxingscene.com quoted Sosa who said Cancun ?is my ideal location. Cancun is where I made the first of my 11 defenses as the world flyweight champion, where I beat Argentina's Luis Lazarte. I would hope that when when I fight for the WBC flyweight championship against Filipino Sonny Boy Jaro, it will also happen here in Cancun." However, Aljoe Jaro said if they want to fight for the title they have to fight in the Philippines because Sonny Boy Jaro wants to avenge his previous loss to Sosa and didn?t want to risk fighting in Mexico.
