PETECIO SCORES ROUSING WIN IN ASIAN WOMEN?S BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS

PhilBoxing.com

Although it was only her first bout in the 6th Asian Women?s Boxing Championships, the Philippines Nesthy Petecio got off to a rousing start with a 12-3 victory over a game Yuan Hu of Chinese-Taipei in the biting cold weather of Ulan Bator, the capital of Mongolia.

The 19 year old Petecio from Davao made good use of her hand-speed and power to score with remarkably accurate punches.

She blanked her Chinese-Taipei opponent 3-0 in the opening round scoring almost at will and padded her lead to a comfortable 7-1 spread at the end of the second round before finishing the bout with a comfortable 12-3 tally.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines executive director Ed Picson reported that ?so quick were Petecio's punches that even her long-distance uppercuts connected as did her wicked digs to the body.?

ABAP delegation head Picson said "We're very happy with Nesthy's performance today. But she will face a tougher opponent in the second round of the preliminaries. She goes up against Un Jong Choe of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North)" on Wednesday.

Colorful opening ceremonies marked the first day of competitions in freezing cold weather. Temperature Monday was at -15C in the daytime. Picson said ABAP president Ricky Vargas had made sure all team members were issued winter clothing and accessories and this "was much appreciated and utilized (gamit na gamit) by everyone".

Veteran Alice Kate Aparri of Baguio, a 3-time SEA Games gold medalist and 2-time bronze winner in the World Championships (New Delhi, 2006 & Barbados, 2010), faces another boxer from Chinese-Taipei, Meng-Chieh Pin on Tuesday afternoon amidst hopes that she will follow in the footsteps of Petecio.

The third member of the PLDT-ABAP team, Josie Gabuco, drew a bye and will see action also on Wednesday, against China's Yukie Luo.

The Philippine delegation includes National Head Coach Pat Gaspi, and women's coaches Mitchel Martinez and Violito Payla. Asian Women's Commission member Karina Picson is one of the international technical officials (ITO's) overseeing the event. She was appointed to the tournament by ASBC (Asian Boxing Confederation) president Gofur Rakhimov.
