JUANMA LOPEZ PROMISES REMATCH WITH SALIDO WILL BE A WAR By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 09 Mar 2012 Former WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez promises his rematch with Oscar ?Siri? Salido who grabbed the title from him in a stunning 8th round stoppage on April 16, 2011 will be a ?war.? The fight which takes place at the Roberto Clemente Coliseum in San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday, Manila Time, will be telecast by ABS-CBN Studio 23 beginning at 2:00 p.m. with former two-time featherweight title challenger Bernabe Concepcion (31-4-1. 17 KO?s) battling undefeated North American Boxing Organization champion Mikey Garcia (27-0, 23 KO?s) in a ten round supporting bout. In a final pre-fight press conference, the 28 year old southpaw Lopez (31-1, 28 KO?s) said ?This fight is going to be a war. Orlando, you had a good night last year ? but I want my title back. I let you wear the belt for 11 months but I?m bringing it back to where it belongs on Saturday. I have had a great preparation for this fight and I?m very confident. I never gave excuses about my last fight with Salido. He won. He knocked me out, fine. I don?t make excuses; I fight. If the ref didn?t stop the fight when he did last time, I?d still be fighting.? The 31 year old Salido who won the title in Puerto Rico had no qualms of returning to the hometown of Juanma Lopez to prove he doesn?t fear the former champion or is worried about a hometown decision. Salido said that entering the first fight he had some doubts but now that he had beaten Juanma he is confident he could beat him again. Salido who epitomizes the deep-seated rivalry between Mexico and Puerto Rico in the ring said ? I am 1000 percent sure I can win. I?ve been in the gym preparing and I know what to expect. Even though I won last year, I still have something to prove. In the ring, we have a score to settle?I don?t have much to say, that?s not who I am. It?s the press that said Juanma made excuses. To me, it doesn?t matter either way. My job is the same on Saturday night no matter what.? Since he lost the title Lopez fought once scoring a 2nd round TKO over Mike Oliver to win the Latino interim featherweight title on October 1, 2011 while Salido successfully defended his title with an 11th round TKO of Japan?s Kenichi Yamaguchi on July 23, 2011 after dropping him once in round three. In his last fight against Weng Haya of the Philippines, Salido was given a scare when Haya dropped the world champion in rounds three and four but couldn?t finish him off enabling Salido to come back and win by an 8th round TKO on December 17, 2011. Garcia who is the younger brother of Roberto Garcia, trainer of WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire predicted a tough fight against Concepcion who twice fought for the world title and lost. He was disqualified at the end of round seven by referee Jay Nady when he hurt Steve Luevano and hit him after the bell had sounded with Luevano claiming to be badly hurt by the illegal blow on August 15, 2009.. Concepcion then faced ?Juanma? Lopez in a fight where both fighters were dropped in the opening round before ?Juanma? decked Concepcion twice in the second round to win by a TKO. The 24 year old Garcia whose WBO NABO title will be at stake and not his NABF belt said ?It?s a dangerous fight and it means everything to me. If I want my title shot, I need to win. There has been talk about me fighting the winner of Lopez and Salido. I want my chance. I hope to fight the winner of Saturday night?s fight for the belt before the end of the year.? For his part Concepcion who is also 24, said he is excited about fighting Garcia. He noted ?I came to Puerto Rico once before (in July 2010 to fight Lopez). Thank you to the promoters and all the fans for having me back but I hope for a different result this time.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
