WBC NAMES DONAIRE KO OF MONTIEL AS ?KNOCKOUT OF THE YEAR? By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Wed, 18 Jan 2012 The World Boxing Council has named Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire?s spectacular 2nd round KO of veteran Mexican champion Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel on February 19, 2011 as the ?Knockout of the Year? for 2011. The WBC announced its various awards on Tuesday with heavyweight champion and longtime WBC favorite Vitali Klitschko being named ?Boxer of the Year? while undefeated WBC light middleweight champion Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez was chosen as ?World Champion of the Year.? The WBC headed by its president Don Jose Sulaiman noted that Alvarez ?conquered the vacant super welterweight title and defended it three times and thus fought four championship bouts in 2011.? Donaire who was recently named ?Athlete of the Year? by the prestigious Philippine Sportswriters Association had earlier been recognized by Sports Illustrated which also picked his stoppage of Montiel as the ?Knockout of the Year.? Donaire first received the award for ?Knockout of the Year? in 2007 when he scored a stunning 5th round knockout of highly-fancied Australian Vic Darchinyan to win the IBF/IBO flyweight title on July 7 that year. The demolition of Darchinyan was also voted the ?Upset of the Year.? Thailand?s ageless flyweight champion Pongsaklek Wonjongkam was awarded the coveted ?Fighter of the Decade? accolade having fought his 26th championship bout which put him just one bout behind former heavyweight champion Joe Louis who made 27 and legendary Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez who had 37 title fights. The WBC named the action-packed battle between ?Vicious? Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto in which both fighters were dropped twice as the ?Bout of the Year? in which Ortiz won the title and inflicted the first setback on the previously undefeated Berto. The bout chosen as ?The Most Dramatic Fight of the Year? was the intense ten round clash between Thailand?s Ponmpayak Porpramook beat Mexico?s Adrian Hernandez which was staged in honor of the King of Thailand;. Two-division world champion Jhonny Gonzalez was honored as ?The Exemplary Fighter of the Year.? Gonzalez was cited for being a hunble, decent, hard-working and formidable champion who represents boxing in an exemplary manner both in and out of the ring.? Undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr was cited for the ?Comeback of the Year.? The WBC noted that Mayweather returned to boxing after a long layoff and conquered the WBC welterweight championship knocking out Victor Ortiz in a highly controversial and dramatic fashion.? A ?Special Honor Award? was given to Julio Cesar Chavez Jr ?for being the first Mexican fighter in boxing history to become middleweight champion of the world? while Oscar De La Hoya?s Golden Boy Promotions was named ?Most Active Promoter of the Year? for having promoted 11 main fights and one elimination bout.
