WITH MAYWEATHER FIGHT IN LIMBO, PACQUIAO LOOKS FOR OTHER OPPONENTS

PhilBoxing.com

With a massive fight against undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr in limbo following his 90 day jail sentence following a plea bargain over beating up his girlfriend Josie Harris and traumatizing their kids in 2010, Ring Magazine?s pound for pound king Manny Pacquiao will look for other possible opponents in a fight card that Top Rank promoter Bob Arum said is likely to take place in June.

With Mayweather out of the equation, Arum has mentioned a possible fourth fight with Juan Manuel Marquez, a rematch with Miguel Cotto or a bout against Timothy Bradley.

Trainer Freddie Roach has added Lamont Peterson to the mix pointing out that the junior welterweight entered the ring at 155 pounds when he won the IBF title from Amir Khan and would make, in Roach?s words, ?a great opponent? should Peterson decide against a rematch with Khan who is also trained by Roach.

ABS-CBN correspondent Jay Dayupay reported that Pacquiao said that a fight with Mayweather ?might not push because he is faced with cases? which includes the defamation charges filed against Mayweather by Pacquiao himself over allegations that the eight division world champion was on performance- enhancing drugs.

Even if his sentence is reduced for good behavior its unlikely that Mayweather who normally trains up to ten weeks for a fight could be ready in June although the possibility of a Pacquiao fight in November hasn?t been ruled out.

However, Pacquiao toldf ABS-CBN that Mayweather?s legal problems are not yet over pointing out that ?Even if he is released, he might have to face other cases? which may well include Pacquiao?s own lawsuit.

According to Arum, he was scheduled to meet Pacquiao in Los Angeles in the first week of January to discuss a possible Mayweather fight but with that fight unlikely to happen in June because of Mayweather?s jail term, they would have to look for alternatives.

The Mayweather jail sentence has also raised questions over his boxing license which runs out at the end of this year.

Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer was quoted by boxing writer Steve Carp as saying the commission cannot suspend Mayweather because he will not be a licensee. However, indications are that Mayweather may have to appear before the NSAC and note on his application for a license in 2012 that he was convicted of a crime and spent time in prison at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas.

Kizer said ?Ultimately it is up to the commission to determine whether he is licensed? adding that ?Obviously he (Mayweather) is not going to fight before December 31 and until he applies for a license there?s nothing to rule on.?
