WBC WORLD CUP LAUNCHED NEXT MAY By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 18 Dec 2011 Sulaiman. World Boxing Council (WBC) president Don Jose Sulaiman announced that the initial staging of the World Cup will begin in May next year. Sulaiman said the decision to stage the World Cup was approved at its recently concluded 49th Convention at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to Sulaiman and his son, WBC executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman, the tournament will last for 40 weeks. The WBC president added that he had reached an agreement with US TV and that the final prize award will be of $250 thousand dollars for each division. Sulaiman said the World Cup ?it?s one of the biggest and most ambitious programs of the WBC in almost 50 years, because all the champions of the organization will take part? The Manila Standard learned that the TV network will select from 5 to 7 cities in the world to present the bouts of the 8 classic divisions ? flyweight, bantamweight, featherweight, lightweight, light welterweight, middleweight; light heavyweight and heavyweight. The only ?super? division, will be super lightweight. The WBC World Cup will be different from the World Cup of Boxing staged by Golden Boy Promotions when fighters from two countries battled each other. The first staging was on October 29, 2005 between Mexico and Thailand in Tucson, Arizona which featured four WBO world title bouts with the Mexicans winning 5-1. The second event was between Mexico and the Philippines at the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California which the Filipinos won 5-1, with Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista suffering the only setback when he lost by a 1st round TKO to the menacing WBO super bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon. Veteran Gerry Penalosa scored a stunning 8th round knockout over fancied Johnny Gonzales to win the WBO bantamweight title while the other winners were Z ?The Dream? Gorres, Michael Domingo, AJ ?Bazooka? Banal and Diosdado Gabi. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
