RIOS POUNDS MURRAY FOR BELTLESS WIN

PhilBoxing.com

New York - Brandon Rios 28-0-1 (20 KOs) entered the ring of The Garden without the WBA lightweight belt that was just in his possession yesterday against John Murray 31-1-(18 KOs) of Manchester, England. But that did not deter the Oxnard, CA brawler on disposing of the game fighter from the UK. Murray started active early in the fight as he unloaded hooks and uppercuts on Rios but Rios although a bit different from the fighter we've known him to be took it in and dished some of his own himself.

Both fighters decided to fight in the inside from the opening bell, one that clearly favored Rios in the fight. Rios did not have to not have to spend a lot of energy from moving around too much in the ring as Murray was there in close proximity of his punches. Rios gave Murray his own dose of uppercuts and hooks as the infighting never ceased on every round. Murray got the worse of it as he walked to his corner on the end of the 4th with a bloodied nose.

That was the telling sign of the fight as Murray became less active after that round. Rios took advantage of it by pounding on the Englishman's bloody face, making it a messier one. He unloaded vicious uppercuts that found its way to Murrays face. But the lad from Manchester was as tough as he can be. With swelling developing below his eyes and more blood oozing from his cuts, he did not retreat from Rios' relentless punching. His corner's previously white towel is now red from all the blood wiped from his face.

The punishment ended for Murray in the 11th round as Rios unloads a mixture of uppercuts and hooks on the hapless Englishman. Referee Earl Brown stepped in to stop Rios from inflicting more damage on the now defenseless Murray. The win improved Rios' unbeaten record to 29-0 but without the belt that he is supposed to be defending tonight. He lost it not in the ring but in the scales yesterday as he failed to make weight.
