MARES PREDICTS A GREAT FIGHT VS AGBEKO

PhilBoxing.com

IBF bantamweight champion Abner Mares predicts a great fight when he battles Ghana?s Joseph Agbeko in a grudge rematch ordered by the International Boxing Federation after Mares won a hugely controversial first fight where refere Russell Mora tolerated several low blows by Mares and erroneously called two knockdowns that cost Agbeko the title.

At the official weigh-in at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, Mares tipped the scales at 117 pounds while Agbeko came in at 117 ? pounds.

After the weigh in Mares told Fightnews ?I feel great making weight just expect a great fight from me I am going to win? while Agbeko stated ?The weight is good expect a very impressive fight from me tomorrow.?

The fight will be telecast at 12 noon on Sunday by AKTV IBC 13, the free-to-air sports channel of ABC 5.

The undefeated Mares has a record of 22-0-1 with 13 knockouts while Agbeko has a record of 28-3-1 with 22 knockouts.

Shorly after the two fighters posed for for the traditional faceoff the fans began cheering ?Mexico Mexico!? in support of Mares who is promoted by Golden Boy Promotions while Agbeko and his team waived the Ghana flag.

Also on the line besides the IBF title will be the WBC Silver bantamweight title held by Mares.

The co-main event promises to be just as exciting as the Mares-Agbeko showdown with hard-hitting Australian southpaw Vic Darchinyan looking for another world title against Panama?s WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo ?Dinamita? Moreno who is making his US debut..

Both fighters also made the weight. Moreno (31-1-1, 11 KOs) weighed in at 118 lbs. while Darchinyan (37-3-1, 27 KOs) tipped the scales at 117 ? pounds.

Moreno was quoted saying ?Just waiting for tomorrow to do my job I feel fine made the weight and ready,? The usually cocky Darchinyan told Fightnews ?I made the weight I am hungry now, I am feeling very good. I am here for a fight and I will destroy him.?

One of Darchinyan?s stunning losses was at the hands of Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire who stopped him with one vicious left hook in the fifth round of their IBF/IBO flyweight title fight on July 7, 2007.

Donaire was also being eyed to fight Moreno for the bantamweight crown last year but it somehow didn?t work out. Donaire won the WBC/WBO bantamweight titles with a sensational 3rd round TKO of Mexican veteran Fernando ?Cochulito? Montiel last February 19 in Las Vegas but has since relinquished the title and is scheduled to face former champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr for the vacant WBO title on February 11.
