COTTO ? MARGARITO II SELLS OUT THE GARDEN

PhilBoxing.com

New York ? Bob Arum was a happy man today at the press conference for the undercard fights of Cotto?Margarito II in New York. And he has every reason to be. Arum, who is seven days short of his 80th birthday, announced that the venue for the fight which is the famous Madison Square Garden (MSG) has completely sold out two days before the big event on Saturday.

?Boxing has never been stronger than it is now,? said the famous promoter. ?Don?t tell me boxing is dead. These young men up here, I want them to realize the future of the sport is very, very strong,? he added.

The newly renovated MSG sold its 17,943rd ticket at 10:42 am today, just hours before the scheduled presser. It is expected to bring a gate of over 3 million dollars for the said fight. Miguel Cotto has done very well in New York owing to the large Puerto Rican population in this city. This is Miguel Cotto?s second sell-out of the famous arena. His first was when he fought Brooklyn native, Zab Judah in 2007.

Arum presided over the press conference as he introduced the fighters involved on the undercards of Saturday?s fight. He introduced each boxer that included Brandon Rios and his opponent John Murray of the UK; East Coast fighters Pawel Wolak and Delvin Rodriguez who will battle each other in a rematch of their July classic which ended in a draw. There was Philly native and welterweight contender Mike Jones and his counterpart Sebastian Lujan of Argentina, whose last fight was a 9th round KO of Filipino Mark Jason Melligen. Light Heavyweight and Notre Dame Alum Mike Lee and former Manny Pacquiao spar mate and Super Middleweight prospect Glen Tapia of New Jersey who fights separate foes were also presented to the press by Arum. All spoke briefly at the dais and then posed for pictures afterwards. The presser?s highlights were courtesy of Brandon Rios who dished out strong words against Murray. He also refused to shake hands with the Englishman who just shrugged it off.

The weigh-ins for the entire cards will be held tomorrow at The Theater at Madison Square Garden at 4 pm.
