PACQUIAO AND DARTS: THE NUMBERS ADD UP

When Manny Pacquiao launches his new line of darts and dart products this Thursday at the Midas Hotel in Pasay City, he won?t just be hoping to rack up sales in the marketplace. He?ll be looking to help Filipino school kids rack up improved scores in math.

The link between playing darts and improved ability at math is well proven in places such as the United Kingdom, where the government has introduced darts in schools as a way to help kids learn math, and with great success. When playing darts, players have to make instant mental calculations, quickly adding, multiplying and subtracting their scores. Pacquiao has taken a cue from this program and plans on introducing a similar initiative in the Philippines in conjunction with his range of dart products.

Since joining forces last April, Manny Pacquiao, the world?s most exciting boxer, and Target Darts, the UK?S most prestigious darts design and manufacturing company, have worked hand in hand to create what are clearly some of the most exciting products ever to hit the world darts market. From the beginning of the collaboration, the educational aspect of the product has been at the forefront of the design process.

Indeed one of the highlights of Manny?s darts range is an innovative new Manny Pacquiao darts pack for children which contains a Pacquiao branded paper board, and two sets of Pacquiao branded soft tip darts. This set is part of an educational initiative designed to help promote enhanced math skills in Pacquiao?s native Philippines and will compliment the boxing icon?s on-going charitable endeavours, as well as his political initiatives as a Congressman for the district of Sarangani in Mindanao.

Rod Harrington, the UK darts legend who has won over 50 titles in his illustrious career, says that linking darts and math is the perfect tool for Pacquiao to use to compliment his drive to improve math standards in the Philippines.

?Playing darts is a great way for kids to learn math because when they are playing they don?t realize that they are learning numeracy skills at the same time,? said Harrington, who will be in Manila this week to help launch the Manny Pacquiao dart range. ?That?s because they are having so much fun. In the UK the government has implemented programs in schools using darts to teach basic math skills to kids and it?s been a tremendous success.?

On Wednesday, Harrington will lead a contingent from Target Darts UK in introducing the Manny Pacquiao darts to the Field of Dreams recreational center in Tondo, Manila. This is the site behind the notorious Smokey Mountain garbage dump where last year the Junior Chamber International Manila(JCI) in conjunction with Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation (GK), turned over a recreation center and football/baseball field to the impoverished community. Now, the center will have it?s own darts program.

?I applaud Manny Pacquiao for wanting every Filipino child in the world to be the best that they can be,? Harrington said. ?Using darts to help improve the math skills of Filipino school kids is a great compliment to the work that Manny is already doing and I have no doubt this initiative will be a massive success.

?I look forward to meeting Manny Pacquiao and helping him launch his stunning new line of darts and promoting their use in enhanced numeracy skills throughout the Philippines.?

The entire Manny Pacquiao darts range is now on sale at all Toby?s Sports outlets throughout the Philippines, and other selected retail outlets. The Manny Pacquiao darts products will then be rolled out worldwide over the next several months.
