ALA Promotions launches PINOY PRIDE VIII: PHILIPPINES vs. MEXICO By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Tue, 09 Aug 2011 Cebu City ? Three boxers from the ALA Gym of Cebu will face tough Mexican opponents this September 10 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino in the eighth installment of the Pinoy Pride series. Milan ?Metodico? Melindo (24W-0L, 8 KO's) will fight for the vacant WBO Intercontinental flyweight title against Francisco ?Chiquita? Rosas of Mexico (22W-8L-2D, 13 KO's). Most boxing pundits think Melindo is a couple of fights away from a world title shot but ALA Promotions Pres. Michael Aldeguer wants to give Melindo more experience building fights. ?The only way to assess the true potential of a fighter is to give him tough opponents,? Aldeguer said. Rosas is an experienced boxer who has faced the likes of Edgar Sosa and Roman Gonzales. He is also a former WBC Fecarbox champion and faced name fighters like Omar Soto and Ivan Meneses. ?I have seen a few of his fights.? Melindo said, ?We cannot take Mexican boxers for granted. They have excellent technique and are good body punchers.? Melindo dream fight is against Giovani Segura, ?It will be a big challenge. He has an aggressive style which would fit my style. And he is more popular than me. (smiles)? Jason ?El Nino? Pagara (27W-1L, 16 KO's) will fight his second straight Mexican opponent, WBC Fecombox lt.welterweight titlist Rosbel ?Lobito? Montoya (12W-2L-1D, 11 KO's). Last June, Pagara stopped Juan Carlos Gallegos in four rounds but not before encountering problems including a hematoma under his right eye. ?I learned a lot from my last fight.? Pagara said, ?I know that I need to train harder because Mexicans are not easy opponents.? Montoya, whose moniker means 'Little Wolf', has stopped his last three opponents. Genesis Servania of Bacolod City, a unbeaten boxer who has been under the radar for some time, will fight Gerson ?El Nene? Guerrero. Last June, Servania (14W-0L, 5 KO's) won by second round knockout over Richard Donaire in his big card debut during Pinoy Pride VI. Servania will be facing his first foreign opponent. Guerrero (34W-8L, 26 KO'S) is a former Fecarbox, WBO Latino and NABF champion. A very familiar name on his record is Daniel Ponce de Leon, who stopped him in two rounds five years ago. Guerrero has also fought the likes of Mauricio Pastrana and Christian Mijares. Servania started his career as a technical boxer but he has changed to a more aggressive style and has knocked out his last two opponents. ?We told him that boxing is a business and you must entertain the crowd.? trainer Edito Villamor said, ?We told Genesis to be more aggressive. He is ready for Guerrero. Expect fireworks and expect a knockout.? ?My training regimen has changed,? said Servania, ?I know this will be a difficult fight for me.? Penned to see action in the undercard are young ALA prospects Roma Rate and Mark Vincent Bernaldez, who will face Cris Leon. Also attending the presscon were ALA Promotions Vice Pres. Dennis Canete, ALA PR director Chad Canares, and ALA trainer Joseph Baldago. ?Philippine boxing has arrived, We brought world class fighters like Vic Darchinyan and Fernando Montiel here in Cebu. We will try to stage a world title fight for Melindo here.? Michael Aldeguer added, ?Why go to Las Vegas when you can watch world caliber fights here in the Philippines??
