FILIPINO RISING PROSPECT MARLON TAPALES ISSUES CHALLENGE TO EDRIN DAPUDONG By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Mon, 07 Feb 2011 Marlon Tapales (R) after his latest victory. DALAGUETE, CEBU -- After disposing his adversary at 2:46 of the first round past midnight Monday at the full-house Dalaguete Gym here, rising Filipino superfly prospect Marlon Tapales (16-1-0, 5KO) immediately issued a challenge to former WBC silver flyweight champion Edrin Dapudong of the Braveheart Stable and who is now promoted by ALA Promotions. Tapales, who also challenged the aging Bert Batawang earlier, caught the slippery Charlie Cabilla (9-6-3) with a vicious right uppercut to the jaw towards the end of the first round that sent Cabilla to the canvas out for good for Tapales' sixteenth victory against only one loss. Tapales previously beat Cabilla via a 12-round unanimous decision last June. Dapudong captured the WBC silver belt by knocking out Mexican Jesus Jimenez in Tepic, Nayarit, Mexico last June but failed to defend the belt when he lost to another Mexican, Wilbert Uicab via UD in Cancun last September. In his last outing, Dapudong knocked out Sofyan Efendi of Indonesia last Jan. 29 at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. A Dapudong-Tapales fight promises to be a slambang affair between two young Filipino hopefuls. "It will be a hell of a fight," says Pacquiao confidant Wakee Salud who, together with Bong Yap of Scorpion Boxing Stable, manages Tapales. "If they cannot put it up in Cebu," Manila-based promoted Aljoe Jaro, who will have a card on June 29 headlined by Denver Cuello in Angono Rizal, chimed in, "I'm willing to promote that fight in Manila." Reach by PhilBoxing for his reaction, former North Cotabato governor Manny Pi?ol who manages Dapudong's career, said that he will discuss the matter with ALA Promotions who now schedules fights for the Braveheart boxers ang promises to get back for their answer. TAPALES OFF TO THE U.S. Whether he fights next in the Philippines or not, Tapales will more likely go to the U.S. to take his career to the mecaa of boxing. "I will bring him to Baguio to train alongside with Manny Pacquiao," Salud said. "And hopefully Freddie Roach will like him and will be able to help him improve. After Baguio, Tapales will go to the U.S. with the team and will be based there," Salud concluded. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Dong Secuya. |
