FARENAS WINS ACTION-PACKED BATTLE AGAINST DELGADO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 16 Jan 2011 Featherweight Michael Farenas, the hard-hitting southpaw prot?g? of former two division world champion Gerry Penalosa proved his worth with a majority ten round decision in an action-packed battle against Ariel ?Machine Gun? Delgado Saturday night. A huge crowd at the Wawa basketball court in Barangay Sto Nino, Paranaque that included multi-titled Australian promoter and popular KO Boxing TV host Peter Maniatis and former Australian bantamweight champion Paul Ferrari enjoyed every minute of the fight as Delgado lived up to his monicker and kept pressing the action throughout while Farenas counter-punched effectively. Both fighters engaged in some torrid exchanges. Delgado who moved up from super bantamweight worked to the body with solid lefts and rights while Farenas, picking his spots with precision, nailed Delgado with some vicious uppercuts and hooks to the head. It was the first real test for Farenas after a couple of easy KO wins against patsies and Penalosa was pleased that his fighter passed the test and showed he is indeed a prospect which was a view shared by Maniatis. The Australian promoter told the Inquirer he would like to feature Farenas in a big fight card against a top Australian contender later this year. Delgado appeared to upset Farenas?s rhythm in the early rounds with his aggressive style as he kept ripping Farenas with body shots and winging away with a roundhouse right but once Farenas studied Delgado and settled down, his superior boxing skills and timing paid dividends. Delgado suffered a cut on his right eye and his mouth was bloodied while Farenas also suffered a nasty cut just below his right eyebrow forcing GAB lady doctor May Banez to check on both fighters before allowing the bout to continue. Farenas, working behind a good jab midway in the fight, turned things around with the far more accurate and telling punches and caught the onrushing Delgado time and again with some jolting uppercut but failed to stop him although he visibly hurt Delgado a couple of times in the late rounds.. A overly concerned Penalosa kept shouting instructions from ringside while his wife Goody calmed him down especially when Farenas began to get the upper-hand from round six onwards. Surprisingly the judges turned in widely varying scorecards. Romy Yulo had Farenas the winner 97-93 while Edwin Sese had Farenas by a wider 98-92 margin. In stark contrast judge Ricardo Canlas scored the fight even at 95-95 handing Farenas a majority decision victory. With the win Farenas improved to 27-2-3 with 24 knockouts while Delgado dropped to 19-6-3 with 8 knockouts. The fight will be telecast on RPN 9 on January 22 at 1:00 p.m. on the top rated weekly boxing show 'THE MAIN EVENT' presented by Tanduay, the No.1 Rhum.
