ROCKY FUENTES KNOCKS OUT THAI CHALLENGER

CEBU CITY -- OPBF Flyweight Champion Rocky Fuentes, fighting in front of hometown crowd for the first time after three successful defenses of his title abroad, connected with a vicious left cross to the cheek of Thai challenger Inthanon Sithchamuang in the second round sending the courageous Thai crushing to the canvas at the Waterfront Hotel here. Japanese referee Katsumo Abe did not finish the count as Sithchamuang was clearly out of his senses.

Sithchamuang (9-4-0, 4KO) engaged Fuentes to a toe-to-toe battle while the fight lasted even hurting Fuentes in the left to the delight of the packed Waterfront Hotel crowd untile Fuentes abruptly ended the proceedings with that crushing left cross. The end came at 2:19 of the second round.

Fuentes has now improved his record to 28-6-2 with 18 knockouts.

CONDES TKO HORIKAWA

Former world champion Florante 'Little Pacquiao' Condes scored a 7th round technical knockout over Kenichi Horikawa of Japan. The Japanese visitor (20-9-1, 4KO) fought a protracted battle refusing to mix it up with the Filipino knockout artist frustating the Marinduque native at times. Condes (25-5-1, 20KO) however connected enough to make the upper portion of Horikawa's left eye to start bleeding. The referee stopped the contest early in the 7th round to have Horikawa's cut examined by the ring physician who allowed the contest to continue. At the resumption of the action, Condes pressed the attack and trapped the Japanese in the corner of the ring. The referee stopped the contest after the Japanese was about to go down from Condes's pounding. The end came at 2:40 of the 7th round.

SUICO WINS OVDER TINAMPAY BY MAJORITY DECISION

Comebacking Randy Suico earned a majority decision victory over Arnel Tinampay in their welterweight battle at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City Saturday night. Two judges scored the bout 78-74 and 77-75 for Randy Suico while the third judge had it 76-76 draw. Philboxing had it 76-76.

Tinampay started fast in the first round scoring clean shots to the head and with crisp combinations over Suico who appeared to be losing a step and out of rhytmn. In the second to fourth rounds, Tinampay, fighting smart, continued to potshot Suico. But the Mandaue City native Suico, who has won several OPBF titles, came back strong starting in the fifth round scoring solid shots to the head of Tinampay. By the sixth round, Tinampay's left eye began to close owing to the constant pounding of Suico's rights. Suico continued to press the attack in the closing rounds but Tinampay, who has never been stopped in his career, weathered Suico's onslaught to finish the fight standing.

Suico improved his record to 30-6-1 with 25 knockouts while Tinampay dropped to 12-12-1 with 4KOs.

The main event fight between Milan Melindo of the Philippines and Carlos Tamara of Columbia was still going on as of this posting.
