Marjun Yap to fight in Fuentes-Aritomi undercard

PhilBoxing.com

Marjun Yap of Cagayan de Oro City will face Hiromasa Ohashi of Chita, Aichi, Japan in the undercard of Rocky Fuentes' second OPBF title defense in Nagoya, Japan this September 5. Yap (13W-2L, 7 KO's), who campaigns in the super bantamweight division, has won six straight fights since his back to back loses to Carlo Magale in 2008. Last year, Yap won a 10th round TKO win over Pramuansak Posuwan at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. The Thai boxer suffered leg cramps during the opening seconds of the final round.

Yap's last appearance in Cebu was a 5th round TKO win over Julius Agcopra during the January 2010 Sinulog Festival at the Gaisano Country Mall. Fuentes also fought in this Sinulog card, knocking out Pit Anacaya in three rounds. Yap's last fight was a ten round unanimous decision win over Richard Betos in Davao City last June 26.

Ohashi (21W-9L-3D, 15 KO's) is a former OPBF superbantamweight champion. He won the title last year with a 7th round TKO win over Filipino Rolly Lunas. Ohashi lost his title to countryman Akifumi Shimoda by unanimous decision last March. His fight against Yap will be a non-title bout.

Fuentes (26 W-6L-2 D, 16 KO's) will be making the second defense of his Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation flyweight crown. He is ranked in the top ten of the WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF. Yasuto Aritomi (17W-1L-2D,8 KO's) will be making his second attempt to win the OPBF title. Fuentes won the title last March with a majority decision win over Japanese Masafumi Okubo in Tokyo. His first title defense was against Shigetaka Ikehara last June was also in Tokyo where he won by 11th round TKO. Fuentes' cornermen will be Joseph Baldago and Edito Villamor.

Fuentes vs. Ikehara was a classic ring war and affirmed the Cebuano's status as a rising flyweight prospect. Fuentes rocked Ikehara in the opening round but the Japanese fought back and had Fuentes hanging on for survival in the third.

It was during the third round that Fuentes showed his heart and amazing powers of recuperation. Ikehara matched every power punch Fuentes threw throughout most if the fight but in the end the ALA boxer's superior conditioning and courage pulled him through. Investing in body shots also helped Fuentes as the Japanese started to fade. Ikehara's cornermen eventually had to think about their boxer's health and safety and threw in the towel in the 11th round.

Fuentes vs Aritomi promises to be another thriller and will be held at the International Conference Hall in Nagoya.
