Thoughts on Phils. vs the World

PhilBoxing.com

Alejandro “Zorrito” Barrera (20W-4L, 13 KO’s) matched Rey “BoomBoom” Bautista (29W-2L, 22 KO’s) punch for punch but the Mexican wound up with a bloodied nose in the second round. They took turns staggering each other much to delight of the Waterfront Hotel crowd.

In the fourth a punch inflicted an ugly looking gash on Barrera’s right eyelid. The ring physician recommended a halt to the bout. The fans wanted more but Bautista was declared winner by TKO at 1:14 of the 4th round. The safety of the boxer supersedes everything.

But I’m sure fans would want to see a rematch. Barrera represented his Mexican pedigree very well.

If there is one ALA boxer who has visibly improved under conditioning coach Pio Solon, it’s Milan Melindo (22W-0L, 7 KO’s). South Korean Jin-Man Jeon (13W-4L-1D, 3 KO’s) was a live opponent who took Melindo’s best shots to the body and head and came back with his own hooks.

But in the 2nd, Melindo landed a left uppercut and left hook into Jeon’s eye socket. The Korean was down on all fours and stayed on the canvas. That kind of impact on a boxer’s eye can cause a searing pain inside his head.

This is Melindo’s second straight stoppage win. Last April, he scored a 4th round knockout win against Komrit Twins Gym of Thailand in Dubai, which was the site of the first Philippines vs the World match-up.

Melindo said after the fight that he feels stronger now with their new training regimen. This is obviously bad news for his next opponent.

Jimrex Jaca (31W-6L-3D, 16 KO’s) knocked out Pipino Cuevas,Jr (14W-6L, 12 KO’s) of Mexico in 2:22 of the very first round. It was a perfect and unimpeded left straight from the Negros southpaw that landed on Cuevas’ jaw.

Jaca has knocked out three straight opponents since making his comeback. Fans would be interested to watch him get tested against a legit world top ten contender.

Florante Condes (24W – 5L-1D, 20 KO’s) scored one knockdown and dominated the game Sofyan Effendi (10W- 9L-2D, 8 KO’s) of Indonesia in 8 rounds with lopsided scores of 80-71 from all three judges. Condes’ frightening power can make most opponents shift to defensive mode.

Effendi was a knockout waiting to happen but Condes was gone for14 months after his loss to Nkosinathi Joyi of South Africa. More activity to shake off the ring rust is definitely in order.

Other results:

Marlon Alta of Gen. Santos City won by 2nd round TKO over Naozumi Tsuchiyama of Japan. Tsuchiyama was pinned to a neutral corner and was the recipient of a barrage of punches prompting the referee to stop the bout at the 40 second mark.

Team Tsuchiyama did not like the stoppage but their fighter received a warm round of applause from the crowd. Tsuchiyama fights with a prosthetic right leg.

Jun “Flash” Entor of Mabinay, Negros Oriental and Jaime Alin,Jr of Valencia, Bukidnon engaged in a blood soaked 4 round contest. Both boxers were cut in the first round due to a clash of heads. Entor had the crowd in stitches with his comical ring moves and he also fought seriously enough to earn a split decision win. Two judges had it 39-37 for Entor and one scored it 40-36 for Alin.

Wilbeth Loberanis of Mandaue City gave Romulo Ramayan of Valencia, Bukidnon a 4 round boxing lesson. Loberanis used lateral movement, a stinging jab and accurate one-two combinations to win by 40-36, 39-37 and 39-37.

Kotsky Ebalang of Cagayan de Oro won by majority decision over Pedro Balaba of Tagbilaran City in a well fought 4 round superflyweight bout. The scores – 38-38 and two judges had it 39-37 and 40-36 for Ebalang.
