Philippines vs the World Presscon Highlights By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Thu, 26 Aug 2010 The adversaries for Saturday's highly anticipated ?Philippines vs the World? match-up met and sized up each other during a press conference held Thursday noon at the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu City. The boxers stated their readiness and were confident of victory. Alejandro ?Zorrito? Barrera of Mexico, who will fight Rey ?BoomBoom? Bautista in the main event, said, ?I have trained hard in Mexico City, had a good training camp and my preparation is excellent. I hope to have my hands raised in the end.? Barrera said that the legendary Marco Antonio Barrera is his cousin on his father's side. As far as strategy is concerned, ?I'm going to box. If the opportunity for a knockout presents itself, then I'll take it.? Barrera also praised the Filipinos and the host city for their hospitality. He describes Cebu as ?muy bonito? and that he wishes to see more of the country after the fight. Bautista on the other hand said that he is aware that Mexicans are warriors but he is confident of winning. He has prepared long and hard for this fight. Pipino Cuevas,Jr of Mexico,who will face Jimrex Jaca, stated that ?I have worked with various sparring partners with styles similar to my opponent. We come here with a lot of will to win and represent Mexico. We hope to raise Mexico's name.? ?I learned the value of discipline and preparation from my father.? Cuevas said. He is the only boxer in their family. When asked about the chances of Antonio Margarito against Manny Pacquiao, he said that ?It will be difficult for Margarito but since he is Mexican, we will support him.? Cuevas' father reigned as WBA welterweight champ during the 70's and was one of the most exciting fighters in the sport. Jaca for his part said that he will just try his best to secure a victory. Former IBF minimumweight champ Florante ?Little Pacquiao? Condes said that he is more focused now in his training. ?My personal and managerial problems are known to everyone. But that is all gone, they are all gone. Now I am fully focused during training. I will just fight any opponent they give me, be it for a world title or not.? Condes' opponent, Sofyan Effendi of Indonesia said that he has trained hard for three months in Surabaya, Indonesia. His best asset according to his trainer is his timing. Milan Melindo, who will fight Jin-man Jeon of Korea, also expressed confidence in winning and that he will not be made into a stepping stone for his opponent. Weigh-in of the boxers will be at SM City Friday noon. Fight day is Saturday August 28 at 6 PM.
