DAPUDONG TO DEFEND WBC SILVER FLYWEIGHT TITLE VS UICAB By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 02 Jul 2010 WBC silver flyweight champion Edren ? Brave-Heart? Dapudong (19-2, 10 KO?s)is scheduled to defend his newly-won title against Mexico?s Wilbert Uicab on August 21 in Mexico. This was disclosed by Dapudong?s manager, former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol who said the promoters in Mexico had wanted Dapudong who made a big impression on fight fans in picturesque Nayarit province when he scored a spectacular 1st round knockout over highly-favored Jesus ?The Destroyer? Jimenez last June 19, to defend his title in late July but that trainer Noli Pinol, his brother, had said it was too soon. Fight fans will get a chance to watch Dapudong?s short-lived battle with Jimenez as well as a flashback to his WBO Oriental title victory over veteran world title challenger Bert Batawang plus a glimpse of some of the other promising Braveheart Gym fighters in a one-hour TV special at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday over ABS-CBN?s Studio 23 with Dapudong, governor Pinol and Dapudong?s trainer Noli Pinol as well as well-known boxing columnist and commentator Recah Trinidad as guests. Uicab, nicknamed ?Hurricane? is 26 years old and has a record of 28-5-1 with 17 knockouts. He is the reigning Mexican flyweight champion having won the title with an 8th round TKO over tried and tested Faustino Cupul last June 5. Uicab is described as a crowd-pleasing boxer-puncher who has won nine of his last ten fights with one no decision against Anthony Villareal of the US when Uicab suffered a cut on his left eyebrow in the second round and couldn?t continue. Villareal is the same fighter who lost to his WBC Youth Intercontinental flyweight title to world rated Milan Melindo last January 14 at the Waterfront Hotel and Casino in Cebu.; Among Uicab?s victims in h is winning streak was Filipino BJ Dolorosa who dropped a ten round unanimous decision in a North American Boxing Federation title defense by Uicab on June 6, 2009. The Mexican southpaw won the vacant NABF title with a 10th round TKO over Jose Alberto Cuadros on January 17, 2009 and is considered a tough opponent. However, both Dapudong and the Pinol brothers are not afraid and believe that the newly crowned champion would be able to overcome the challenge of Uicab and hopefully set up a world title fight against Jose Luis ?Pingo? Miranda who won the WBC flyweight title with a 5th round TKO over Richie Mepranum or move down and face WBC light flyweight champion Omar Nino who won the title from Filipino Rodel Mayol on the same day that Dapudong destroyed Jimenez. Dapudong told us that he had no problems making the light flyweight limit and was actually fighting as a light flyweight before Pinol received the offer to take on Mexican flyweight Jimenez.
