MAYOL-OMAR NINO TRILOGY DOWN THE ROAD

PhilBoxing.com

Pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz who was seated at ringside behind WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman and was able to review the head-butts which resulted in referee Hector Afu deducting three points from Rodel Mayol which eventually cost him his WBC light flyweight title in a rematch with former world champion Omar Nino, the controversy generated in their first two fights may result in a third fight down the road.

Koncz who said the point deductions were in keeping with the new WBC rules on head-butts told us in a post-fight interview from Mexico that a third fight ?is a possibility because we have a good relationship with Omar Nino?s people so its a great possibility.?

However, Koncz who handles Mayol for Pacquiao and his MP Promotions said they want to ?take one step at a time and get another win under our belt. We are not going to get an immediate rematch.?

The Pacquiao adviser said Mayol received one head-butt and he (Koncz) ?tried to argue with Sulaiman for a point deduction but the problem was there was no cut and therefore the rule didn?t apply.? Under the rules a fighter has to be cut by a head-butt for a point to be deducted from his opponent.

Koncz said Mayol would return to Los Angeles and after a break is likely to get back into the gym to get his career back on track.

Many fight fans, mainly Filipinos, took issue with referee Afu for ostensibly stopping the fight to have the cuts on Omar Nino checked by the ring doctor when the Mexican was in trouble, giving him a much-needed break and preventing Mayol from pressing his advantage.

However, Koncz said they had no complaints and conceded that Omar Nino was the "better man tonight" and finished stronger in the championship rounds where Mayol didn't throw too many punches.

Meantime Koncz, who has had some differences with former North Cotabato goveror and journalist Manny Pinol over Pinol?s onetime fighter Diosdado Gabi, sent his ?congratulations to Pinol and his fighter Dapudong for his spectacular knockout? in the picturesque resort province of Nayarit where Pacquiao and his family recently spent an enjoyable vacation as guest of well-known Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran and Nayarit governor Ney Gonzalez.
