DONAIRE RESPECTS MARQUEZ? MEXICAN HEART BUT NOT HIS POWER By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 21 Jun 2010 WBA super flyweight interim champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire has listened to the warning of well-known Mexican promoter Fernando Beltran telling him not to underestimate his July 10 opponent Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez but said that while he respects his opponent?s Mexican fighting heart he isn?t too concerned about his power. Donaire told us he agreed with Beltran?s observation that it would be a mistake to judge Marquez by his lopsided, ten round unanimous decision loss to Filipino flyweight Richie Mepranum last March 12 in Dallas, Texas saying ?you can never judge a fighter by just one fight. For me, I look at Marquez as a fighter who is hungry and who will do everything to get a title.? However, Donaire said ?I believe my speed, my power and my height will be a big factor.? While respecting the Mexican?s power Donaire said he ?can?t hit as hard (Vic) Darchinyan. He (Marquez) has his power but I have faced fighters who are a lot stronger than him. But one thing that he has is his Mexican heart and he?s gonna go there and be tough.? The fighter who stunned the boxing world with a spectacular 5th round, one punch knockout of Darchinyan to win the IBF and IBO flyweight titles on July 7, 2007 which was named ?Knockout of the Year? said that ?other than his Mexican heart I think I have the advantage of strategy, speed and power over him.? Donaire who revealed that he is some ten to twelve pounds over the super flyweight limit said staying at 115 ?is honestly too much for me and I am ready to go up. This is it. I?m done with 115 and I?m ready to move up to 118 and then go directly to 122.? The skillful and talented Donaire who is ranked No. 4 in Ring Magazines?s pound-for-pound list which is headed by fellow Filipino and ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao said he is confident that a fight against current WBC/WBO bantamweight champion Fernando Montiel who is scheduled to defend his title against Puerto Rico?s Eric Morel later sometime in August will happen as promised by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum. Donaire who is training at the Undefeated Gym in San Carlos, California said everything has been going along ?pretty good? in the last two weeks of sparring and is having former WBO featherweight champion Steven Luevano coming in over the weekend with trainer Robert Garcia who will remain in training camp until Donaire leaves for Puerto Rico.
