DAPUDONG?S SPECTACULAR 1ST ROUND KO SAVES THE DAY FOR THE PHILIPPINES AS MAYOL FALTERS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 20 Jun 2010 Edren Dapudong?s spectacular 1st round knockout of Mexico?s Jesus ?Destroyer? Jimenez to win the newly minted WBC Silver belt in the picturesque resort province of Nayarit saved the day for the Philippines as WBC light flyweight champion Rodel Mayol head-butted his way to defeat in an ugly rematch with former world champion Omar Nino while veteran Juanito Rubillar dropped a split decision in a rematch for the IBF light flyweight title against Hekkie Budler and Ronald Ferreras lost by unanimous decision to Gideon Buteliza in am IBO minimum weight title fight also in South Africa. Philippine-Mexican rivalry was highlighted by the acrimonious and ugly return battle between Mayol and a seemingly angry Omar Nino in a bout that was littered with head-butts and stoppages by referee Hector Afu who had Omar Nino examined by the ring doctor after he appeared to suffer the most from the head-butts and sported nasty cuts over both eyes. Pound-for-pound king and ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao?s adviser Michael Koncz who was in the corner of Mayol told us in an overseas telephone conversation after the fight that Mayol was deducted three (3) points for head-butts which, when it causes a cut under the new rules adopted by the World Boxing Council, means a one point deduction. Koncz who was seated behind WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman who watched the action on a TV monitor conceded "they were head-butts and there was nothing we could do arguing against the point deductions." He said when there was a head-butt Sulaiman "would call me over and allow me in all fairness to watch the replay." Koncz said Omar Nino had trouble making weight and that Mayol "for some reason chose to be a counter-puncher. When he decided to throw combinations earlier in the fight he was doing very well but then he seemed to tire out in the last three or four rounds. There is no excuse. The better man won today." He said Mayol did receive one head-butt and he "tried to argue with Sulaiman for a point deduction but the problem was, there was no cut therefore the rules on a deduction didn't apply." Koncz at the same time lamented the fact that Mayol ?didn?t throw enough punches? and that he is hoping that the Nino Romero handlers would agree to a third fight sometime in the future, especially since their first meeting ended in controversial fashion last February 27. Omar Nino caught Mayol with a low blow and as referee Vic Drackulich shouted and moved in to give Mayol time to rest, Nino nailed him with a strong left hook that knocked him out cold. Mayol was carried out of the ring on a stretcher and after some initial confusion WBC secretary general Mauricio Sulaiman and his committee at ringside ruled the fight a draw. All three judges scored the rematch for Nino Romero who first won the title from then champion, Filipino Brian Viloria but tested positive for an illegal substance after he retained the title with a draw in a rematch in Las Vegas and was suspended, enabling Edgar Sosa to win the vacant crown which he subsequently lost to Mayol in another controversial 2nd round TKO. Samuel Conde Lopez had Omar Nino ahead 115-112, Daniel Mendoz of the United States had a much wider 117-109 margin while Britain?s Harold Laurens scored it for the hometown fighter 115-111. With his win at the the Plaza De Toros in San Juan del Rio in Qureterao, Omar Nino improved to 29-3-2 with 11 knockouts while Mayol fell to 26-5-2 with 20 knockouts. Dapudong who is a prot?g? of former North Cotabato governor and journalist Manny Pinol gave away 3 ? inches in height to the 26 year old southpaw Jimenez (5 7 1/2?) who is the reigning WBC Latino champion having won the title with a 4th round knockout over Santiago Ivan Acosta (16-2-2, 7 KO?s) on June 26, 2009. But that didn?t faze the power-punching Filipino who sent Jimenez crashing to the canvas twice in the opening round before referee Gerald Ritter counted the Mexican out at 2:52 of the round. The 5?4? Dapudong was coming off a 2nd round KO of Nelson Llanos on March 2, 2010 following an eight round unanimous decision over Jayson Geda on August 9, 2009. Dapudong?s biggest win was a 7th round TKO over former world light flyweight world title challenger, veteran Bert Batawang in a WBO Oriental title fight on April 24, 2009. Dapudong overpowered Batawang dropping him once in round 5 and then again in round 7. Nicknamed ?Brave Heart? Dapudong won the WBO Asia Pacific Youth minimum weight title with a 3rd round TKO over Jack Amisa of Indonesia on September 29, 2007.
