UNDEFEATED JUAN CARLOS BURGOS STOPS RICARDO CASTILLO By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 04 Jun 2010 Undefeated Carlos Burgos (25-0, 18 knockouts) of Tijuana, Mexico has scored a twelfth round stoppage of Ricardo ?Piolo? Castillo (38-8-1, 25 KO?s) in a WBC featherweight title eliminator before a sell-out crowd in Guadalajara. The 22 year old Burgos, nephew of former world champion Victor Burgos caught Castillo, the younger brother of former two-time WBC lightweight champion Jose Luis Castillo, with a hard left hook to the chin at the start of the fight but Castillo landed some telling punches on the inside in an effort to negate the reach advantage of Burgos. Castillo hit the canvas in the second round from what seemed like a legitimate punch but referee Marty Sammon of California ruled it a slip. As the fight progressed the WBC No.2 ranked Burgos began to connect with the more telling punches. Going into the so-called championship rounds the younger Burgos looked the fresher fighter and when Castillo didn?t come out of his corner for the twelfth and final round Burgos was awarded the TKO victory and took a major step towards a shot at the world title. In his last fight Burgos scored a spectacular 12th round stoppage over the tough and durable Juan Carlos Martinez to successfully defend his WBC Caribbean Boxing Federation title on January 15, 2010. He also scored a 6th round TKO win over Yogli Herrera in a scheduled ten round bout on October 9, 2009 dropping Herrera in rounds 3 and 6. Herrera is the same fighter who lost a six round unanimous decision to WBO featherweight title challenger Bernabe Concepcion of the Philippines who battles undefeated Juan Manuel ?Juanma? Lopez for the title in Puerto Rico on July 10. The 30 year old Castillo was a former two-time world title challenger and was ranked No. 8 by the WBC. Besides being the Mexican featherweight champion Castillo was also the former NABF champion, the former WBC Latino super bantamweight champion and the former Mexican super bantamweight champion.
