JOYI WINS IBF MINI-FLYWEIGHT TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 28 Mar 2010 In a battle of southpaws South Africa?s undefeated Nkosinathi Joyi has won the IBF mini-flyweight championship with a unanimous twelve round decision over champion Raul Garcia of Mexico at the new International Convention Center of the Regent Hotel in East London in a fight card staged by multi-titled promoter Branco Milenkovic. The classy Joyi earned the title shot after a lopsided win in a title eliminator against former champion Florante Condes of the Philippines on June 26, 2009 with Condes himself telling us that Joyi was an excellent fighter with quick hands who also hit hard. Condes said then that Joyi should beat Garcia who won a somewhat controversial twelve round split decision over the Filipino southpaw on June 14, 2008 with Adelaide Byrd having Garcia the winner by a ridiculous 118-110 margin when the other judge who scored the fight for Garcia had it by a 115-112 margin and the third judge who had Condes the winner scored it for him by the same 115-112 margin. Joyi used a stinging right jab and rocked Garcia a number of times during the bout in an impressive performance that lived up to our pre-fight prediction that Joyi would win the title. Even the assignment of two South African judges Wally Sbowball and Isaac Tshabalala with the third judge being Mexico?s Alfredo Polanco took nothing away from Joyi?s victory. The South African judges turned in identically 119-109 scorecards while Pacheco also scored it for Joyi by a big margin, 118-110 which clearly reflected the domination of the newly crowned champion. Joyi was the aggressor from the opening bell and carried the fight to the champion like a good challenger should and Garcia simply couldn?t match the speed, power and overall skills of Joyi who often hurt the champion with solid rights but couldn?t put him away. Joyi kept his unbeaten record in tact and moved to 21-0 with 15 knockouts while Garcia who suffered his first defeat dropped to 27-1 with 16 knockouts.
