MICHAEL ALDEGUER NAMED ‘BEST PROMOTER’ IN ELORDE ANNUAL AWARDS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sun, 21 Mar 2010 Youthful Michael Aldeguer, president of the famed ALA Gym of renowned boxing patron Tony Aldeguer has been named “Best Promoter” and will receive his award at the prestigious Gabriel “Flash” Elorde Annual Awards banquet on March 25 which marks the late, great world champions 75th birth anniversary. Aldeguer assumed the burden of effectively running the management and promotional side of the ALA Gym from his father and is being recognized for continuing the fine tradition of excellence and integrity the Aldeguers have been known for. Since he assumed the presidency of ALA Promotions with Dennis Canete as vice president, they have staged some excellent high-profile fight cards at the plush, jampacked ballroom of the Waterfront Hotel in Cebu working closely with the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN. ALA Promotions is once again teaming up with ABS-CBN to telecast a fight card in Dubain on April 9, headlined by the the returning former world title challenger Rey "Boom Boom:" Bautista and WBO No.1 ranked minimum weight and multi-titled regional champion Milan Melindo. In its last major undertaking ALA Promotions teamed up with Smart Sports and ABC 5 which was acquired some months ago by the eminent businessman-sportsman Manny Pangilinan to stage a hugely successful fight card at the Waterfront in which Melindo and world-rated AJ "Bazooka" Banal scored impressive wins over worthy opponents. The “Best Manager” named by the Elorde awards committee is Cotabato vice governor and longtime journalist Manny Pinol who has a stable of promising fighters who are also regional title holders including WBO Asia Pacific bantamweight champion Jundy Maraon. The award for the “Best Trainer” will go to pound-for-pound king Manny Pacquiao’s childhood friend and assistant trainer Restituto “Buboy” Fernandez who currently trains such outstanding young prospects as Eden Sonsona and Richie Mepranum who both won big fights last weekend in Dallas, Texas in impressive fashion. The award for the “Best Referee” will go to Silvestre Abainza while welterweight Mark Jason Melligen has been chosen as the “Most Promising Boxer.” “The Fight of the Year” is the classic battle for the Philippine minimum weight championship between Michael Landero and Rollen Del Castillo which was held in Zamboanga City on November 21, 2009 and was promoted by popular congressman Erbie Fabian. The fight was won by Landero who is managed by Rommel Nazario, son of the late Rod Nazario who will also receive a posthumous award at the star-studded “Banquet of Champions.” Top photo: Michael Aldeguer (R) with the author.
