MAYOR LIM HONORS DONAIRE WITH MANILA MOTORCADE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Fri, 19 Feb 2010 Mayor Alfredo Lim and the City of Manila honor WBA Interim super flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire with a motorcade after the adopted son of Manila pays a courtesy call on the Mayor following his arrival from the US. Donaire was also given a motorcade by the city when he scored a unanimous twelve round decision to win the title against Rafael “El Torito” Concepcion of Panama who was some four-and-a-half pounds over the 115 pound limit. Lim was full of praise for Donaire who hammered Mexico’s Manuel “Chango” Vargas into submission in three rounds at the Pavilion of the Las Vegas Hilton last February 14 Manila time in the “Pinoy Power III/Latin Fury 13” fight card telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN and the popular global channel TFC. Mayor Lim said it was an impressive win by Donaire. Donaire used his speed and power plus his height and reach advantage to quickly dispose of the challenger who was a late replacement for fellow Mexican Gerson Guerrero who was found to have a tear in the retina of his right eye in the final medical examination hours before the pre-fight press conference. Mayor Lim said he realized that Donaire “could handle Vargas easily because not only was he bigger but he was also really an excellent fighter.” Lim said he also appreciated Donaire’s reaction when the Filipino champion sympathized with Guerrero after he learned about Guerrero's detached retina. Lim commended Donaire for being a good human being who felt sorry for Guerrero who was supposed to fight him. After the press conference at the Shimmer Room of the Las Vegas Hilton, Donaire approached a downhearted Guerrero and told him “I feel sorry because as a fighter I know how he feels.” Then, Donaire turned to Dyan Castillejo of ABS-CBN who speaks Spanish and requested her to tell Guerrero “I feel his pain because for me he is a true warrior and I know that he trained really hard for it and I know he’s ready and I’m ready but as a fighter I give him a lot of respect and my heart pains for him as well.” Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
