MOREL SIGNALS THE END OF THE “FEARLESS” ERA
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 15 Feb 2010

Tonight at the Las Vegas Hilton, Puerto Rico’s Eric Morel may have possibly ended the fighting days of one of Philippines’ greatest champion, Gerry “Fearless” Penalosa.
The seemingly ageless Filipino ex-world champion ran out of luck and lost via a close split decision. The scores were: 115-113 and 116-112 for Morel and 115-113 for Penalosa.
Penalosa lost a 12 round fight to the veteran from Puerto Rico who stood taller and had longer reach than him. He also used his head to cut up Penalosa.
But Penalosa can go out with his head up high. He did not quit and up to the very end he was throwing his vaunted counter punches that put many boxers flat on the canvas.
He was cut, battered and bruished but Penalosa never quit. Indeed, he gave credit to his name, “Fearless”.
With that, let us be the first to thank Panalosa for the good fights in the past and the honor he brought forth for our country and his family. He indeed lived fully to the expectations
of simply being a “Penalosa”. He was a first class person in and out of the ring and he blazed a path for many others to follow.
Mabuhay ka, Gerry!
