DONAIRE”S VICTORY WAS A NO BRAINER
By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Mon, 15 Feb 2010

Nonito Donaire Jr kept his WBA Interim Super flyweight title via a scintillating KO of Manuel Vargas of Lagos de Moreno, Mexico. The end came at 1:33 of round three.
Vargas who fights from 108 to 118 pounds was a last minute substitute to Gerson Guerrero who was disqualified by the NSAC for medical reasons. He had a detached retina.
The victory of Donaire was expected but none the less it was a text book beauty in so far as its delivery was concerned.
Donaire was careful and calculating. He demonstrated the true patience of a champion, proving here and there looking for an opening to land his famed left hand.
When he landed it, it was game over.
Donaire now looks forward to a possible match with Vic Darchinyan, but it would not be surprising if he skips that fight and zero in on far bigger and better fighters in the bantamweight and super bantamweight divisons. He may even eventually end up fighting as a featherweight.
Doniare’s victory however could have been more meaningful. But really, it is not his fault if his promoters keep on putting less competitive fighters before him.
With his victory tonight, hopefully Top Rank will put just a wee bit more attention to him and spend more efforts to find him better opponents.
After all, Donaire deserves to showcase his talents against top fighters and not those who have no chance against him.
Do we see a fight with Montiel in the near future? I guess that would be more exciting than watching him fight the loudmouth from Armenia, Vic Darchinyan.
