MAYOL AT EIGHTY FIVE PERCENT FORM

PhilBoxing.com

With still 16 days to go, Rodel Mayol is slowly but surely getting to peak form for his WBC title defense against Omar Nino Romero in Mexico City on February 27th.

“Today, I weigh-in at 116 lbs just after sparring,” Mayol told this writer as we shared a piping hot bowl of special seafood vegetable soup prepared by the chefs at Thai Restaurant next to the Wildcard Gym with his two jolly trainers, Jesse and Moray.

“I feel that I am now at 85% form. I am expecting to hit about 112 early next week and by the time we fly to Mexico I should be about 110. I should not have any problem making the contracted weight of 108 when we hit the scales on February 26th."

“I feel very strong, even stronger when I was preparing for Sosa in November. I give credit to my trainers, Jesse Arevalo and Moray Quijano for the conditioning routings and of course, my wife Lira for my diet,” Mayol said.

I spoke to Arevalo briefly after the sparring and he feels very good about the way the camp is going. “He is very strong and his combinations are good. I know he will do very well but I am not leaving anything to chance. We need to win big because as the out-of-town fighter, he will be disadvantaged if the decision goes to the judges. I am not saying they will cheat us, but in boxing, that is just how things sometime work. So we are going for a big win to be sure we come home still as champions.”

Mayol sparred 8 good rounds today with a couple of guys from the Wildcard Gym. He first went 4 rounds with a fellow name “Efraim” a bantamweight who holds a pretty good record. He is, from what I was told by others at the gym, undefeated in 10 fights.

Then Mayol went four more rounds with another bantamweight, a 22 year old former US Olympic alternate with a decent KO record named David Clark.

Mayol stood his ground against the bigger sparmates and at one point he knocked Clark across the ring and if it were not for the ropes, he would have fallen to the canvas.

Mayol indicated that he is happy with the way training is going. He is fully focused and has no distractions at all.

“Excited ako doc, and I never felt this way before. Parang nakikita ko na na uuwi tayo na champion pa rin.”

(I am so excited and I can almost see we are going back home as champions.”

Amen, Rodel. I know you will do good and win this fight.
