AEROFLOT UPDATE: So loses to Vietnamese GM
By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Fri, 12 Feb 2010
GM Wesley So lost playing with the black pieces against Vietnamese GM Ngoc Truongson Nguyen in his third round game Thursday night (Manila Time) in the ongoing Aeroflot Open 2010 Tournament in Moscow, Russia.
Nguyen opened with 1.Nf3 and used a King's Indian attack setup. They both castled kingside and Nguyen launched his king side pawns to storm Wesley's king. So defended well and managed to exchange queens and enter the endgame. But the Filipino was pinned into a disadvantageous position with his king and rook trapped along the g and h files and he capitulated after Nguyen?s 40th move.
GM Ngoc Truongson Nguyen (ELO 2616) will turn 20 later this month. He is also a former child prodigy who won the world under-10 championship in 2000. In 2002, he was awarded the International Master title. In 2004, he became a Grandmaster at the age of 14 years, 10 months.
In 2008, Nguyen was runner up to Ivan Saric in the World U19 Youth Championship held in Vietnam. So and Nguyen played to a 12 move draw in that tournament.
The 16 year old So (ELO 2656) drew his first game with the black pieces against GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami of Iran and won last Wednesday against GM Dmitry Bocharov of Russia.
GM Darwin Laylo (ELO 2556) played black against GM Markus Ragger (ELO 2568) of Austria. Laylo was two pawns down in endgame after Ragger?s 62nd move.
Facing two passed pawns and Ragger?s rook plus bishop versus the Filipino?s rook plus knight, Laylo decided to play on in a hopeless position.
Laylo lost his first two games against grandmasters from Azerbaijan ? Rauf Mamedov and Eltaj Safarli.
The Filipinos are competing in the A1 group of the tournament for players with an ELO rating above 2549.
