DONAIRE SPARS TWELVE ROUNDS, FEELS GREAT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 28 Jan 2010 WBA Interim super flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash” Donaire sparred twelve rounds Thursday and said he was “feeling really good and I’m ready.” Donaire said he sparred with Nicaraguan Randy Caballero, Mexican Eric Manriquez and another Mexican featherweight whose name he couldn’t recall. Donaire who trains at the “Undefeated Gym” in San Carlos, California said that two days ago he weighed 120 pounds which is just five pounds over the super flyweight limit “that’s why I feel pretty good, my weights on and I am really ready.” He said he would leave for Las Vegas after a media workout in Los Angeles on Saturday. The classy fighter who has a record of 22-1 with 14 knockouts battles Mexico’s hard-hitting Gerson “El Nene” Guerrero who has 26 knockouts in 34 wins with 8 losses. Donaire said he watched tapes of Guerrero’s fights along with former world champion and trainer Robert Garcia and while he described his opponent as “a strong fighter we can see a lot of weaknesses in what he does and so we are going to try to exploit that and use it to our advantage.” Donaire said that Garcia who worked the corner of Brian Viloria when he lost his IBF light flyweight title in a terrific fight against Carlos Tamara of Colombia at the Cuneta Astrodome in the Philippines last Saturday, would join the training camp on Friday. Garcia himself described the fight card which features four other Filipinos aside from Donaire as “a helluva fight card” in anticipation of the Top Rank “Pinoy Power III” blockbuster which will also feature former two-division world champion Gerry Penalosa (54-7-2, 36 KO’s) in a WBO bantamweight title eliminator against another former two-division champion Eric Morel (41-2, 21 KO’s) of Puerto Rico, undefeated Ciso “Kid Terrible” Morales (14-0. 8 KO’s) in a title clash with WBO champion Fernando Montiel (39-2-2, 29 KO’s), world-rated featherweight Bernabe Concepcion (27-3-1, 15 KO’s) taking on Mexico’s Mario Santiago 21-1-1, 14 KO’s) and welterweight Mark Jason Melligen (16-2, 12 KO’s) going up against undefeated Raymond Gatica (11-0, 6 KO’s), a replacement for the injured former world champion Mike Anchondo . The fights will be telecast by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN as part of its two-year exclusive deal with Top Rank’s Bob Arum. Donaire’s wife Rachael also informed us that Donaire was providing two special ringside ticket for Z “The Dream” Gorres who wants to watch the fights and that they planned to take Gorres and his wife Daches out for a nice Valentine’s Day dinner in Las Vegas. She also informed us that Donaire would set aside an undisclosed amount from his fight purse to help Gorres and his family after his promising career was cut short by a tragic injury and brain surgery following his rousing win over rugged Luis Melendez of Colombia last November.
