VASQUEZ VOWS TO END SONSONA’S CAREER

PhilBoxing.com

Former WBO superflyweight champ Marvin Sonsona (14-0-1 with 12 KO’s) of the Philippines and Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr. (17 W-0 L -1 D, 14 KO’s) of Puerto Rico met face to face for the first time in a press conference held Wednesday at the City Hall of Bayamon, Puerto Rico.

The 25 year old Vasquez said that he has been preparing for this opportunity since November. He is confident of victory and will dedicate his win to win family. His father, Wilfredo,Sr. is a former three division world champ, and has promised that his son will score a spectacular knockout and that Sonsona will never fight again.

“He (Sonsona) will see a boxer that hits like a 140 pounder.” The elder Vasquez said.

"It is going to be a very competitive fight, but I come to win and by knockout, I do not have any doubt", countered Sonsona. "They are going to see a knockout on my part".

The clash of two unbeaten fighters is a pay per view event billed as “Making History” will be for the vacant WBO superbantamweight title. It will be held February 27 at the Ruben Rodriguez Coliseum in Bayamon. The press conference was attended by the president of the WBO Francisco Valc?rcel, Promoters Sammy Gello-ani, Sampson Lewkowicz and the city officials of Bayamon.

After a series of bothersome delays, renowned trainer Nonito Donaire,Sr. has started training Sonsona back into championship caliber form. They have opened training camp at the Kennel Gym in San Leandro, California and do their roadwork at Marina Park together with Ciso Morales, who will challenge Mexico’s Fernando Montiel February 13 in Las Vegas.

A victory by the 19 year old Sonsona will make him the youngest Filipino to win two world titles in two different weights. He previously beat another Puerto Rican, Jose “Carita” Lopez for his first title.
