WPBF CHAMPION FARENAS SEES ACTION ON SATURDAY By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 05 Jan 2010 World Professional Boxing Federation featherweight champion Michael Farenas sees action at the Mandaluyong City gymnasium on Saturday for the first time since he won the lesser known organization’s title at the Cuneta Astrodome last October 3. A prot?g? of former two division world champion Gerry Penalosa, the hard-hitting Farenas has a record of 26-2-3 with 23 knockouts and headlines a card to be telecast by Viva Sports on its top-rated weekly boxing show "The Main Event" on Saturdays at 1:00 p.m. on Solar Sports-RPN 9 and sponsored by Tanduay, the No.1 Rhum . The 25 year old southpaw faces Thailand’s tough-looking Sathian Somkhao who is reported to have a solid record but one that cannot be traced on boxrec.com . However it must be noted that many Thai fighters often use different ring names from the names on their passports while their fight records also incorporate their win-loss records in Muaythai. Farenas is looking to win impressively and hopefully break into the world rankings of the leading boxing organizations especially since he has won four of his five fights in the US with the fifth ending in a second round technical draw. The Penalosa prot?g? made his US debut with a 3rd round TKO over Baudel Cardenas on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Juan Manuel Marquez rematch on March 15, 2008. Farenas dropped Cardenas with a crushing left uppercut to the groin area and when the Mexican could not continue after the five minute allotted time after the foul, referee Tony Weeks stopped the fight and scored it a TKO victory for Farenas with the official time of the stoppage as 2:40 of the third round. Ringside reports said Farenas seemed in control of the scheduled eight round bout as he dropped Cardenas twice in the second round, the first with a left hook to the body and the second with a left uppercut. Farenas made his US debut on October 6, 2007 with a 2nd round TKO of Arturo Valenzuela and followed this up with a smashing 1st round knockout of Walter Estrada at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas on May 1, 2009. Following a second round technical decision against Arturo Gomez in Mexico on July 25, 2009 Farenas disposed of a couple of Thai fighters before scoring a 9th round knockout over South Korea’s Jae-Bong Jang on October 3, 2009.
