SONSONA VS VAZQUEZ FEB. 27 FOR WBO CROWN IN PUERTO RICO
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Tue, 29 Dec 2009

Another Philippines versus Puerto Rico showdown is set to take place when undefeated Filipino fighter Marvin "Marvelous" Sonsona goes up against unbeaten Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vazquez Jr for the vacant WBO superbantam title on February 27 in Puerto Rico.
There were earlier plans to hold the fight in the Philippines, but apparently television executives have reckon the fight will be a hard sell considering the fact that boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao will be fighting a month later on March 13 possibly against Floyd Mayweather Jr or Paulie Malignaggi.
Sonsona (14-0-1, 12 KO's), who recently relinquished his WBO superflyweight title due to weight problems before figuring in a draw with Alejandro Hernandez in Canada, signed the bout contract a few days ago with his Filipino promoter Sammy Gello-ani and manager Rajan Yraola by his side.
The WBO superbantam title has been recently vacated by Puerto Rican star Juan Manuel Lopez, who is gunning for the WBO featherweight crown against Steven Luevano on January 23 in New York.
The 25-year-old Vazquez, son of ring great Wilfredo Vazquez, is unbeaten with 17 wins, 1 draw with 14 KO's, and holds the interim WBO Latino superbantam crown.
"This will be a highly-competitive bout between two world class young fighters. Fans in Puerto Rico are aching to see a Pinoy face their idol. And Filipinos will be behind Sonsona to give his country another win over Puerto Rico after Pacquiao disposed of Cotto," said WBO Asia Pacific chairman Leon Panoncillo.
