CAN DOMINGO CONTINUE THE DREAM?

PhilBoxing.com

If there is one fight that needs to happen for sentimental reasons it is Michael Domingo versus Fernando Montiel.

Michael Domingo has signed with Sampson Boxing Promotions headed by boxing's ?Picasso?, Sampson Lewkowicz. There are ongoing negotiations for the ALA Gym fighter to replace his comrade Z ?The Dream? Gorres as the opponent of WBO Bantamweight Champion, Fernando Montiel on February 13, 2010 on the fight card billed as ?Pinoy Power III?.

ALA Promotions President Michael Aldeguer made the announcement of Domingo's signing and said that ?My father (Antonio Aldeguer) and I had no reservation whatsoever in signing up Michael Domingo with Sampson Lewkowicz because he is one person who makes things happen?.

The 29 year old Domingo is a native of Sultan Kudarat. He has a deceptive fight record of 39 wins -14 losses-2 draws, 17KO?s and has surprised many opponents.
Most people don't realize that most of these losses occur early in his career or while on the road in Thailand or Japan.

When he was placed under the tutelage of the ALA Gym, Domingo has scored significant victories. During the Philippines vs Mexico Boxing ?World Cup? in 2007, Domingo scored an important win against Miguel Roman. The Filipino boxers subsequently won and scored a near sweep winning five out of the six matches.

In July 2008, Domingo won the vacant WBO Oriental Bantamweight title from Rivo Rengkung by 2nd round KO then beat the rugged Thai veteran Ratanachai Sor Vorapin via 9th round TKO two months later. Last October, Domingo became the first boxer to stop the highly-regarded Jose Navarro of the U.S. at the Cuneta Astrodome.

Domingo sports the ring monicker ?Bruce Lee? because of his resemblance to the late Hong Kong martial arts superstar. This will be his second world title shot. Three years ago, Domingo fought in France for the vacant WBF bantamweight belt and was stopped by Federic Patrac in the 9th. Domingo is currently on an eight fight winning streak. He has shown vast improvement especially in his defence.

Z Gorres is still hospitalized and under guarded condition in Las Vegas. The aftermath of his fight against Luis Melendez of Colombia is one of the most heart-rending moments in Philippine sports. He underwent emergency brain surgery in a Las Vegas hospital after collapsing in his corner minutes after the verdict was announced.

In 2007, Gorres lost a disputed split decision to Montiel for the WBO superflyweight title on home soil. For the past two years, Gorres dreamed of a rematch. But fate had different plans.

This will be a fight for a fallen stablemate. Domingo scoring a victory on Gorres? behalf will be both just and satisfying.
