IN ALL FAIRNESS, MARQUEZ DESERVES PLENTY OF CREDIT TOO By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Sun, 27 Sep 2009 Now that the results of the Marquez-Mayweather PPV results are out, almost everyone is singing praises and adoring Floyd Mayweather, Jr. for the “one million buys”. One stated that Mayweather gave one million reasons why boxing is still better than MMA. Another one called him a superstar. That can’t be totally true. Boxing can never be better than MMA because they are two different sports and two different audiences. And, I have seen them both! We can’t even compare them as they have different rules and totally different character. Just like apples and oranges which are both fruits, they taste different and certainly don’t look alike. I was witness to a mixed card at the Tachi Palace Casino Resort up in Lemoore, California sometime ago and I saw the difference between the fans and even the press. After the boxing event, some of the boxing fans as well as press people left. Those that stayed were there for the MMA. In fact, certain press photographers just sat behind us during the boxing events and they only took their positions when the MMA started. Such is the nature of the beasts. Boxing is boxing and MMA is MMA. ‘Nuff said! I am a boxing fan and I know many who are like me will not agree with that, but that is just how it is. Two different sports and two different fans. Certainly there may be more boxing fans than MMA fans, but that alone does not make boxing better than MMA. Now, going back to the million PPV’s. Something is totally wrong when all the credits for the “million buys” are going to Mayweather. Mayweather alone could not have generated those million buys. Marquez has a lot to do with the results. If Mayweather fought someone else that is lesser than Marquez, could the “buys” be the same? Certainly not! Therefore, in all fairness let’s give the credits to where they really belong. They belong to BOTH Marquez and Mayweather. And any and all praises for the million PPV’s should be allocated to both fighters. That is the only fair thing to do. I was at the MGM and I know what I saw. From my perspective, there were plenty of Marquez fans in the crowd. In fact, they may well be the majority based on the noise they created. Certainly, it sounded that there were more Marquez fans than Mayweather fans that night If that is the case, then arguably many of those that bought PPV are Marquez fans as well thus, he should get a credit for that, not Mayweather!
