MIGHTY MARK HANDS ZEPEDA A BEATING By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Mon, 17 Aug 2009 Rising junior welterweight prospect Mark Jason Melligen scored a smashing 4th round TKO victory over Ernesto Zepeda of Mexico. The southpaw from Bacolod City controlled the action and repeatedly scored with his left straight from the opening bell. During infighting sequences he would pepper Zepeda with combinations. Melligen would counter effectively everytime Zepeda tried to mount an offense. The Mexican's lack of movement proved to be his undoing as cuts started to bleed around his eyes. In the fourth round a left straight dropped Zepeda to his knees and referee Joe Cortez stopped the carnage at 2:40 of the round. Zepeda drops to 39 wins with 34 KO's, 13 losses and 4 draws while Melligen (16-1, 12KO) recorded his 4th straight victory in the United States. There was celebration in the ALA fighter's corner which had Las Vegas-based British trainer Tony Martin and ALA head trainer Edito Villamor Melligen's performance was a fitting start to the Philippine televised bouts of the fight card billed as "Pinoy Power II" which was held at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. POST SCRIPT: Melligen entered the ring to the tune of “Careless Whisper”. His reasons for doing so will provide very interesting conversations when he returns to Cebu. The fighters weighed 145 pounds during the weigh-in but Melligen does look undersized at welterweight and even against most junior welterweights in North America. But he does make up for it with skill and tenacity. Tony Martin was a guest last week in the popular Cebu boxing radio program “Pinoy Boxing' hosted by Salven Lagumbay and Edward Ligas. He said Melligen may not be ready for the 140 lb division's big names yet but he did mention former lightweight world titlist David Diaz.
