TEAM LUMACAD ISSUES APOLOGY

PhilBoxing.com

TO THE PHILIPPINES MY APOLOGY.

My name is Ken Smith, and I am the manager of Filipino fighter Fernando Lumacad. I will ask the Filipino for your forgiveness for what happened to Lumacad in Atlantic City USA, this past weekend. Fernando was overmatched and it is me who was responsible for this. I am the sole reason that Lumacad was in this situation, and Fernando does not deserve the blame for this.

Regardless of what happened in the fight that night, I plead to you that Lumacad is not a coward, and was simply overmatched and caught by a very hard punch from a great former champion. The fact that Fernando did not rise from this clear knockdown is the difficult part for all Filipinos to accept, and I understand this.

The fact that this was such a big event in the USA and Fernando was just not ready for such a fight as this, is my only explanation to you all. I will just ask your understanding and forgiveness. I accepted this fight for Fernando Lumacad with the best of intentions.

Team Lumacad truly went to the USA expecting to win. Never once did any of us consider anything less than giving 100% effort. Unfortunatley this did not happen, and we are all very very sorry, and ashamed of our effort. The money that was involved was simply too much to pass up. Lumacad is a prizefighter. This is how he supports his family. When this kind of offer comes to the table for a poor boy from General Santos city it is just impossible to ignore.

I admit I was not only thinking of Fernando's needs when I accepted this fight. I was looking for glory too for all of us. I figured he could continue to fight in the Philippines for very little money, or we could take a huge chance against Arce and if he got lucky and won, I would look like a boxing genius. I also figured even if he lost yet fought well he would be respected for that and at least would be paid very well.

Instead, due to my mistake Lumacad has now been tagged as a quiter. I can tell you the boy is heartbroken and ashamed of his performance. Lumacad will return to the Philippines in a few days to face his countrymen. I just hope and pray that the Filipinos will find it in their kind hearts to forgive us. I offer no excuses, we just simply failed.... Fernando will try to prove himself to the people of the Philippines in the future.

Sincerely,
Ken Smith
