TAMPUS LOSES IN SOUTH AFRICA

PhilBoxing.com

The Philippines Marvin Tampus has lost a lopsided ten round decision to Muvhuso Nedzanani at the Wembley Arena in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Nedzanani returned to action after almost a year.

The former South African junior flyweight, WBC Intercontinental light flyweight and World Boxing Foundation junior flyweight champion won the ten-round junior bantamweight bout by scores of 98-92, 99-91 and 100-90.

Sports Zone in South Africa described Tampus as "a useful Filipino fighter with a commendable approach to his job" but said while he "never threatened to win he gave Nedzanani the sort of workout he needed to brush off the ring rust."

The report said Nedzanani was brilliant in the first round and good in the second before losing some of his rhythm in the middle rounds.

In his best moments he showed a dazzling variety of combinations as well as hand speed that his opponent just could not equal. A good reach advantage also helped him to win comfortably.

The South African improved his record to 21-1-3, with 12 stoppages while Tampus dropped to 17-9-2; 12.

The 24-year-old Filipino had battled the likes of Eric Barcelona, Chatchai Sasakul and Eden Sosona and used his experience to go the full distance at high altitude.

Sports Zone said that Tampus "actually had Nedzanani back-pedalling for most of the fight and kept pushing forward right to the final bell."

The South African missed his target too many times but he impressed with the way he scored off the back foot. His right hand, thrown straight down the middle, earned him most of his points and kept Tampus honest.

There were no knockdowns, although Tampus was on the floor twice. He was pulled down in the eighth round and landed on the deck in the last second of the bout when he took one last wild swing and lost his footing.

The 26 year old Nedzanani will now go after bigger names having proved that he is comfortable in the higher division.
