GM Antonio, NM Bernardino to compete in Laos International Open By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Mon, 19 Aug 2024 Manila---Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. and National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. will showcase their talent in the Laos International Chess Open on September 1-7, 2024 at Vientiane Chess Centre in Vientiane, Laos. “I hope to do well in the upcoming Laos International Chess Open on September 1-7, 2024 at Vientiane Chess Centre in Vientiane, Laos," said the 62-year-old Antonio in an interview on Monday. During the 2017 World Senior Chess Championship in Acqui Terme, Italy, he finished second to Grandmaster Julio Granda of Peru in the 50+ category. “I will pour all that I know in the mind boggling chess games,” added Antonio, a 13-time Philippine Open Champion. On the part of Bernardino, a certified United States Chess Master and an online Arena Grandmaster, will try his best and said "I will do my very best for the flag and country and hope to gain some elo rating points." Also competing are Leo Tito Ausan, Jr. and Brian Angelo Young. Ausan is the Philippine ambassador to the People's Republic of Bangladesh, with concurrent jurisdiction over the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and the Republic of Maldives. Young, on the other hand, is the eldest son of 8-time Illinois, USA champion International Master Angelo Young. There are two separate sections in the competition, the Masters Section for players rated 1900 and above and the Amateur Section for players rated below 2200. The Masters Section offers a total pot of USD 15,500 while the Amateur Section puts up USD 6,700 for the winners.
