Antonio, Laylo, Quizon off to hot start in Oaminal chess tilt By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Wed, 10 Jul 2024 Ozamis City---Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., Grandmaster Darwin Laylo and Grandmaster elect Daniel Quizon got off to blazing starts by winning their second round matches in the 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Chess Tournament at the AYA Hotel and Residences in Clarin, Misamis Occidental Tuesday, July 9 here. Antonio defeated Gilbert Baba and Alger Palanas, Laylo subdued Richard Cenas and Drigo Teves while Quizon trounced Edgardo Bariquit and Carlo Saludsod. “The first two rounds is one of the toughest rounds in any tournament. It usually sets the tone of how you’re going to perform,” said the 62-year-old Antonio, the country's top bet in the FIDE World Senior Chess Championships 2024 to be held in Porto Santo Island, Portugal, from November 16 to 29. “We hope to perform well in this event and gain some Elo rating points,” added the 44-year-old Laylo, one of the top players of the star-studded Dasmariñas Chess Academy headed by Mayor Jenny Barzaga and Coun. Kiko Barzaga. "We hope to sustain our winning ways," said the 19-year-old Quizon, who needed to raise his live rating of 2460 to 2500 to complete his GM title status. The usual suspects also made their presence felt early. IM Michael Concio Jr., IM Ronald Bancod, IM Eric Labog Jr., FM Roel Abelgas, FM Alekhine Nouri, FM David Elorta, FM Vince Alaan and NM Joey Albert Florendo all won. FM Victor Bruce Lluch , FM Ellan Asuela, NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr, NM Jayson Saubre also opened with 1.5 points each. Earlier, Misamis Occidental Gov. Henry S. Oaminal and Asia's First Grandmaster Eugene Torre, made the ceremonial moves kicking off the two-day tournament (July 9 and 10) also graced by Ozamis City Mayor Henry Oaminal, Jr., Rep. Sancho Fernando Oaminal, Ozamis City Administrator Atty. Sam Norman G. Fuentes, GM Antonio, GM Laylo, GM elect Quizon, Labor Arbiter Judge Jason Bandal and tournament director AGM/Engr. Rey Cris Urbiztondo. During the opening ceremony, Gov. Oaminal announced all participants will receive P3,000 each. He also doubled the prizes from P355,000 to P710,000.
