NM Ivan Travis Cu rules 2024 NCRAA Palaro chess tilt to give San Juan City the team gold medal

Team Gold Medal: San Juan City (National Master (NM) Ivan Travis Cu and Jericho Winston Cu)
Manila---National Master (NM) Ivan Travis Cu emerged as the champion in the boys secondary chess tournament of the 2024 National Capital Regional Athletic Association (NCRAA) held from April 22-25, 2024 at the Las Piñas Elementary School (Central), Conference Room in Las Piñas City.
NM Ivan Travis pocketed the individual gold medal for ruling the tournament which fielded over 30 woodpushers.
He had a near-perfect campaign after tallying 6.5 points in the seven-round Swiss system competition.
NM Ivan Travis defeated Chanro Jed Atilano of Taguig/Pateros, Aron Joshua Toledo of Pasig City and Andrew San Antonio of Pasig City in the first, second and third rounds, respectively.
He snapped his three-match winning streak when he had a draw against Marc Nemis of Parañaque City in the fourth round.
Then NM Ivan Travis beat Cedric Kahlel Abris of Mandaluyong City in the fifth round, Joshua Roque of Manila in the sixth and penultimate round and Franklin Loyd Andes of Quezon City in the seventh and final round enroute the coveted title.
NM Ivan Travis, an incoming Grade 10 student of Xavier School San Juan, led his team in the 45 minutes plus 30 seconds increment time control format.
His younger brother Jericho Winston Cu, an incoming Grade 9 student of Xavier School San Juan chipped in 3.5 points to give San Juan City the team gold medal.
Thus, NM Ivan Travis will represent the region in the 2024 Palarong Pambansa in Cebu in July. NM Ivan Travis is a candidate for FIDE Master.
The siblings Cu are playing under the guidance of Xavier School San Juan coach IA Rolando "Rolly" Yutuc.-Marlon Bernardino-
