PACQUIAO IS TOP POUND FOR POUND BOXER - SO WHAT ELSE IS NEW? By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Fri, 13 Jun 2008 Los Angeles, CA:- Last Wednesday, at the middle of the press conference at the 15th floor of the Cox Communication Center in San Diego, Bill Caplan, one of the top promotional gurus at Top Rank Promotions interrupted the conference. ?I have a very special announcement?, he said. ?It?s breaking news, as I speak to you now,? he continued. Then Caplan proceeded to announce that he just got information from Ring Magazine revealing that they have revised their listing after the retirement of Floyd Mayweather and elevated Manny Pacquiao to the top of the list. ?Manny Pacquiao is now the new pound-for pound boxer in the world,? Caplan proudly announced to the San Diego press corps and went on to explain what that means for the media people present who are new in the fight business. With that, a huge round of applause reverberated in the room and everybody proceeded to congratulate Pacquiao, who responded to all the accolades by just simply flashing that killer Pacquiao smile and saying, ?Thank you.? When asked how he felt about being the new guy on top of the list, Pacquiao responded: "It?s a very big honor for me to be named pound-for-pound. All I am trying to do is maintain that in every fight. I can assure that I give a good fight and make people happy.? Pacquiao during his career won world titles at 112, 122, and 130 pounds. On Saturday, June 28th, he will be going for his fourth weigh class title as challenges WBC lightweight (135 lbs) champion, David Diaz of Chicago at the Mandalay Bay Casino Resort in Las Vegas. Someone asked him about Ricky Hutton, the 140 pound champion. Pacquiao answered: ?I want to fight him too.? Odds are the Pacquiao-Hatton fight may happen before the end of the year or early next year. There have been speculations that Bob Arum is quietly laying the ground work for that to happen. But Arum is not saying anything now otherwise, he would throw off the public?s interest to the Pacquiao-Diaz blockbuster. To this writer and to many of the Pacquiao ?fanatics?, the announcement is indeed welcome one. But we just can not help but say: ?So what else is new??
