Ferrer, a top player of the University of the Philippines Women's chess team, scored 10.0 points on account of 9 wins and 2 draws in 11 outings to bring home the PHP60,000 cash prize. More importantly, Ferrer earned an outright Woman National Master Title. "NCFP is pleased to confirm herewith that Precious Eve Ferrer has obtained the title of Woman National Master," said National Chess Federation of the Philippines CEO GM Jayson Gonzales. Ferrer defeated Mary Kaye Gonzales in the first round, Azariah Daniel Cajigal in the second round, Rachelle Joy Pascua in the third round, Elizsa Gayle Cafirma in the fifth round, Shantelle Marie Root in the sixth round, Shaniah Francine Tamayo in the eight round , Crishelle Angelica Dequillo in the ninth round, Jheycelle Subia in the tenth round and Nicole Elaiza Bulalaque in the eleventh and final round. She split the point with Jallen Herzchelle Agra in the fourth round and Woman National Master Mhage Gerriahlou Sebastian in the seventh round. “I am very happy with my victory because almost all of the top players in Ilocos Norte and nearby provinces as well as those from Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan joined the tournament," the 21-year-old Ferrer said, a 4th year College taking up Library and Information Science at the University of the Philippines Diliman campus. "The event is aimed at developing good thinkers through the understanding of chess strategies and tactics, improving the logical abilities and rational thinking and reasoning of the participants, and instilling a sense of self-confidence, self-worth and camaraderie," said tournament director International Master Ronald Bancod. Sebastian, on the other hand, toppled Princess Giovalyn Asan of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte in 40 moves of another London System Opening to score 9.0 points. Sebastian, the pride of Flora, Apayao and a mainstay of the multi-titled Far Eastern University Women's chess team took the runner-up pure of P30,000. The Queen of the North chess championship was supported by Mayor Michael Marcos Keon , 102nd Homecoming UP Vanguard Incorporated (UPVI) Chairman Aldwin Galapon, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), Pag-Ibig Fund , the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) and International Arbiter Ricky Navalta.
