OMONGOS STUNS ELOMAR IN AUSTRALIA By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 29 May 2008 Suddenly it seems Filipino fighters have snapped out of a series of mismatches in Australia and are now punching their way to earn respect. The latest is lightweight Ariel Omongos who scored a stunning fourth round TKO over highly fancied, undefeated Ahmed Elomar. In one of the fights on the undercard of the WBA super middleweight championship bout between Tony Mundine and Sam Soliman which Mundine won comfortably on the scorecards of all three judges at the Vodafone Arena in Melbourne, Omongos put some respectability into his forgettable record of 6 wins against 13 defeats with 5 wins coming by way of knockouts, with his TKO win over Elomar. Elomar, the former Australian featherweight champion was making a comeback for the first time since October 2006 . The Australian suffered a nasty gash due to an accidental head-butt in the opening round against veteran Pedro Malco of the Philippines and the fight was declared a technical draw at the start of the second round when the ringside doctor ruled Elomar was unfit to continue. Elomar had won 13 of his previous 15 fights with two draws and had beaten a number of Filipinos in the process. The 21 year old Omongos dropped a six round decision to Tui Leveni in his last bout on April 12 after scoring a fourth round TKO over Ashley White on March 7 but came back strongly against Elomar. The Sydney Morning Herald newspaper reported that Elomar, the Sydney boxer was ?wrongly arrested last year on suspicion of terrorism? and said he ? had been held for seven days with charges after being arrested during a raid on the house of an Australian-Lebanese citizen in June last year.?
